And no trade with the Kings that I can find.

There wasn't really free agency back then. Wonder how they parted ways?

Sather said that the New York Islanders traded John Tonelli to the Calgary Flames last week because they were trying to help the Flames beat the Oilers in the playoffs.

“Tonelli going to the Flames is a plot against us,” Sather told an Edmonton newspaper.

“It’s a sign of the camaraderie that exists between Cliff Fletcher (the Flames’ general manager) and Bill Torrey (the Islanders’ general manager). Torrey set it up so Calgary could beat us. But remember, we beat another team with Tonelli on it.”

LOL. Tonelli was a holdout in NY and the Isles got two good young players. But they "set it up" to screw Edmonton

He did sign with LA as a free agent, BTW.

Coronato with 15 points in the AHL. How much longer before he is back and playing ahead of Ruzicka.

He needs to be in the top 6 and not on the 4th line.

Letting him rip it up and build confidence in the AHL isn't the worst thing.

Once we start shipping guys out he will probably get called up.

I have never agreed with this logic. He can play PP and whatever 5on5 line could use him.

I thought sending him down was the right thing but I'm not waiting for a trade or injury to call him back. He is a better player than Ruzicka or Duehr full stop. If you're trying to win games, those guys won't be in the lineup much longer.

Oh man this argument brings back memories. On a road trip in 1998(?) with a buddy we argued for hours over whether Boston should be playing Joe Thornton limited 4th line minutes or if he should have been sent down to play meaningful minutes.

Its not to compare a player of Joe's stature to rookies overall, and there is probably good logic for making either move, but playing limited 4th line minutes in the NHL can't be all bad on a players development.

random points

1. Of course Cliff hadn't just pulled in Tonelli, but had snagged Mullen in the lead up to the playoffs too- a 4 time cup winning all star and a future hall of famer, both in their prime- it would be like snagging I dunno Point and Nylander for some change found in the sofa?

2. so funny to look back at us thinking of Tonelli, Riser and Lanny as the old as dirt line, I think they were 28, 31 and 32 that year

3. Sather, never change. there was a brief piece in the Sporting News - summer/offseason of 1988, so months after the Hull-Ramage trade, with Sather bleating to the media that the deal was so obviously a rip off in favor of the Flames as a transaction between friends that he believed that the Flames , as part of the deal still had to send another player yet to be named (although somehow the name Gary Roberts made it into the article) to the Blues that offseason to balance things out

Not all 4th lines are equal though. It's not like you are asking him to play with Lucic and Lewis. A line with Dube, Greer and Coronato would be pretty high tempo and useful.

That line was a force in 86. And then in 87 they did play like they were old as dirt.

Riser was finished after that and Lanny barely hung on to get his 500 goals and a ring.

Fotiu was a cool addition in 86 as well.

I know, it's weird. Players even looked old in their 30s back then. Of course, it was rare back then for a player to even make to 35 before retiring. Most were done by the time they were 33 or 34.
