The other reason I like trading with the Islanders is that their pick is likely to be higher than some of the other potential suitors.

Difference between a pick that could be 10-16 vs a pick that is 25-32 is huge, it's like the value of adding at least another 2nd into a deal.

Having a GM in his 80's is a pretty dumb.

Conroy pouncing on him would be awesome.

Haven't the Isles veen a tad unhappy with Wahlstrom lately? Maybe it was just a postulation here but I recall a couple of months ago Wahlstroms names popping up.

Romanov a 2nd and Wahlstrom is also a legit package for Hanifin. Doesn't need to be a 1st.

We have our Wahlstrom in Ruzicka. A player with skill and upside but not really motivated all the time.

And somehow despite all this scoring 5 on 5, the only players with a worse +/- last year were Kadri, Lucic, and Lewis.

The point is that the other team gets better opportunities when he's on the ice, they offset his production, and become glaring when he's not producing. I was hoping he was going to break out this year, but he took a couple of steps back instead.

Trading up from 25 to 10-12 at the draft likely takes more than a 2nd.

This is why waiting on deals makes no sense if you plan to do them at some point. Flames have played their way out of the top 3 discussion likely even if they sell off soon. Best case is looking more like we will finish 4-10 spot. Longer this takes the less likely #1 CGY 24 is a top 5 pick. But we will wait to add 2nds rather than 3rds because the value of a 2nd is so much higher than a 3rd? Makes no sense to me unless they are trying to make the playoffs which I think is a mistake.

Don't want Wahlstrom. Just don't see the upside. I wanted him and kicked my feet we didn't have our own 1st to draft him but maybe it's fine we didn't. Unless he is a center and can play on Calgary's 1st line, the Flames don't need a forward. We need picks, prospects, and replacable D for the ones going out.

I think it's more than a 2nd, because we got 2 x 3rds to trade down from #19 to #24(Zary) in 2020.

Dube seems like he's being surpassed by multiple younger players. Love Dube for what he brings. He's been one of the few guys in the bottom six who has produced his own offence, and production in the bottom six has been a major issue for the Flames.

The issue is what Dube's demands are. If he wants a big raise, he becomes less worth it very quickly.

The Flames have multiple high energy prospects pushing for space. Already Zary and Pospisal have cemented their spots. There's also Pelletier, Coronato, etc.. looking for time.

I like Dube too. not at anything above $3 million though. And he's also a player the Flames need to look at moving for asset management reasons. Kick the tires around the league on him. If there's good demand, you think about moving him.

Wahlstrom was a name that Friedman had listed on 32 thoughts a couple weeks back when mentioning the Islanders were looking at the Flames defense for trade. I definitely could see him being a piece. Hanifin fits the Barzal/Dobson/Horvst age bracket as well in terms of players in their prime they want to build around.

LeBrun reports Hanifin and the Flames were close on an eight-year, roughly $60 million deal, which would have carried an average annual value around $7.5 million. LeBrun reported the $60 million total on Nov. 14, noting Hanifin decided to he wanted to see the Flames' direction as the team struggled early on and, as a result, Calgary pulled the offer.

Calgary has improved after a slow start and currently sit just one point out of the playoff picture at 9-10-3. LeBrun notes, however, that the Flames mindset of needing a roster reset has not changed, which will likely lead to trades involving Hanifin and other pending unrestricted free agents.

"I still expect, for example, Hanifin to get dealt at some point," LeBrun said on SC with Jay Onrait on Tuesday. "In his case, the idea from everyone involved is that he gets dealt as a signed player – that there's an extension in place for him wherever he ends up.

So the receiving team gets the $60 mil contract? Good.

Friedman had mentioned Arizona taking the longest look at Hanifin to this point, and they could fit that $7.5M in next season without a lot of tinkering.

With an extension in place you have to assume his value does go up considerably.

I just want Conroy to keep it simple and drive for younger well performing players. For me Dallas has always made a bunch of sense for Hanifin and getting back someone like Bourque plus some other peices would be great in aiding this franchise going forward.

Hanifin is the top defender on the market at the moment and settling for a underwhelming package is not acceptable.

Oh man, if the flames could get a Guenther, Hayton, or Geekie level player that would be huge. One of those, a cap dump and a pick would be great imo

I’m in the “Romanov is meh” crowd. I almost choked when I saw the return he got for Montreal. I’ve done a few write-ups on Danny Nelson, and I like him very much. I like him much more when I see how well he’s doing in the NCAA. Very underrated IMO.

All in all, I think there’s better teams to deal with- especially for a big trade chip like Hanifin.
