Phillips' advanced stats still put him in the top 9 on the Caps roster (albeit with sheltered minutes). He's not driving the play, but he is doing the little things right (e.g. blocking shots and not giving away the puck). At even strength, Phillips is second on the Caps in rebounds created and first in expected goals.

It still too early to make a firm judgement on whether Phillips is or isn't a bonafide NHLer. The Caps' scoring issues are much deeper than replacing a fourth line forward...

He is an NHLer. Just a bad one

Ya, I think we didn't keep him because these things were obvious. He just wasn't going to be a good NHL player.

I am still hoping for is success. He seems like a good guy. He is not a similar player to Martin St. Louis though, other than both being undersized and former Flames. There has to be a better comparison.

He's a big enough target to block shots?

I kid. The problem with saying 'it's too early" though is that he's not a young prospect any more (he's in the UFA age bracket now). He should probably be making more noise with less need to be sheltered as he is, if he's going to stick in the league long term.

I give him all the credit in the world though for persevering through last year's BS and landing himself that one way contract.

If the Flames had a spot for him, I wouldn't be opposed to giving him another shot since he's a Calgary boy, but I don't know who he'd bump out right now. The kids are playing better and bumping Duehr out.

He had a chance to re sign and he chose to move on, I doubt the team would pick him back up

so it was a mutual choice really

We already have to figure out room for Coronato again soon, and Pelletier when he's healthy.

Perhaps trades open up some spots, but right now, we don't have spots that need filling.

I think it was a 2 year deal, with the first year being a two-way, and the second year being a one-way.

Phillips decided to bet on himself in a new organization. Hopefully it works out for him, otherwise, his next deal will likely be an AHL or DEL deal.

Here's the way I see it:

Thank goodness he decided to move on. Had he been here, he may have still been penciled-into the lineup, and one of Zary or Pospisil may never have gotten their chance.

Was thinking about him today. Outside of his game against the Flames, he appears to be a total non factor and I'm surprised he is still getting playing time.
Does anyone who watch the Capitals have a view on what is going on? The team actually has a decent record and is still in the playoff chase, despite a massive negative goal differential and having big troubles scoring goals.
