And just wait until there's a coupon dispute, they call the manager in and then need to go do a physical price check of the item. Someone needs to save 20 cents and does not give a #$%$ about how much they inconvenience the line of dozens of people behind them.

And can I pay by cheque?

Had some elderly couple ahead of me break out the FreshCo flyers or something at Superstore to price match on zucchini, cauliflower and other by weight vegetables. Then proceeded to argue for 10 minutes with the cashier and manager when they wouldn't match. All that for what would have been $1.

If you’re taking time out of your day, sure. But if you’re just standing in line annoyed that your time is being wasted, what more are you wasting? The opportunity to think about your favourite bird?

I have a kid and a job. I don't have free time. Sometimes I'm grateful when someone "wastes my time" as I have a justifiable excuse to be out of house. I revel in the moment as my mind drifts into an abyss of darkness that provides a brief moment of quiet. Sometimes I actually have something to do and I'm legitimately pissed.

Strange...how the mental health and food topis are so blended.

I swear on my life when I get to the point of being retired and have more free time I will not forget there are other people juggling jobs, raising kids, trying to squeeze in a hobby or two all while being exhausted by the demands of aging parents and navigating the busiest time of life.

If I ever tell people to slow down and enjoy life you have my permission to punch me in the sack.

The best is when the person being held up throws a toonie on the scanner and tells them to get moving. I’ve only been lucky enough to see this once.

There is a cashier at our Superstore in Seton and one day I was wearing a rugby jersey.

She commented on how much she likes rugby and then proceeded to back it up with knowledge.

We had a nice chat, about 5 mins.

Every time I go I look for her line and we always have a nice little chat.

#### I am old.

By then, there’ll be a bigger target to aim for as well.

To be honest, I sway between making fun of them and their lives ( especially if they are buying strange random crap) and whatever creative project I have on the go.

The biggest issue with self-checkout is that often at least half of them are red/unavailable.

It's not actually a technical malfunction as they are quite robust, it's because management has rules that dictate that only X number of self-checkouts are available depending on how many staff are assigned to monitor them for loss prevention. If they are cheap and only hire one or two people to stand around in the self checkouts, they are going to have a bunch of them off.

Exactly. I'm trying to go back to enjoying life, and waiting in this god damn line is preventing me from doing so

I've always found line-up discourse to be interesting. The person who is at the till now (or the teller or the counter, whatever) presumably waited their turn in the line-up and now it's their turn to be served. Why should you, someone who arrived later and is now waiting in line, have much of any say in how they conduct their business? What makes you more important than the person who already waited in line? Their wants/needs are likely different from yours, but you want to dictate that yours are better or more important?

I can understand the frustration when you are in a hurry as we've all been there, but to expect others to cater to your needs/wants always felt off to me.

It's different now that a lot of places ask you to pack your own bags, but before when people would just stand and watch without getting their wallet ready was hilarious. They'd get all caught off guard and fumble around for it.

How are you so befuddled by this?

In a line, your role is to be efficient to keep the line moving quickly. When it's your turn you should be ready to handle your part of the interaction so as not to unnecessarily slow things down. You can still say hi/bye and please/thank you, of course. Plus you can chat if there's time available while things are being scanned and you aren't adding to the wait of the people behind you. Proudly proclaiming you "aren't in a hurry" is absolutely disrespectful if you're slowing the line down and making people wait on you to enjoy your interaction with the cashier.

You have this completely backwards. Making people wait for you to have a nice little human interaction at your own pace is forcing others to cater to how you want time to be spent. Moving along efficiently is selfless and putting the time of others over the "joy" (?) you get from chit chatting to the young lady who would honestly rather you just GTFO so she can get back to texting her bff about the annoying old guys that keep trying to chat her up.

I see it the other way around. Why is that person at the front more important than everyone else?

I was tempted to do that in this instance but while waiting I was slowing down and enjoying life and watching this unfold was actually pure entertainment for me.

Sobey's by my place has a dedicated check out line for chatters and lonely people. They have signage letting everyone know it's the slow line.
