He then went on to discuss the four UFAs, and that while it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that they get re-signed (as the Flames haven't closed that door), it does not look like that is what is going to happen and that the Flames will do what is best for the organization. Specifically on Z, he said there's a market with a few teams right now but the Flames are banking on the market expanding as other teams open up more cap space as the season goes along.

This sounds exactly as we should be expecting/hoping. Good to hear.

And this is really it. We saw a lot of it last season when Markstrom couldnt stop a beach ball, players tighten their grips, dont engage, dont step up and dont take risks, because every mistake ended up in the back of their net.
If you've got a goalie who can cover some of your mistakes? Then play can become a lot more dynamic because you're willing to take some of those risks.

In the 13 games since the Heritage Classic they've been pretty good:
Record: 7-4-2
Points %: .615 (T-9th)
GF: 45 (10th)
GA: 39 (T-11th)
S%: 10.6% (15th)
SV%: .900 (10th)
5V5 GF: 33 (T-3rd)
5v5 GA: 25 (T-13th)
5v5 CF%: 52.4% (10th)
5v5 HDCF%: 51.2% (13th)
5v5 xGF%: 51.4 (15th)
PP GF: 3 (30th)
PP GF/60: 2.8 (29TH)
PP GA: 3 (T-27th)
SH GA: 9 (t-17th)
SH GA/60: 9.22 (23rd)
So they've been top 10 in most metrics over this stretch...except their special teams have been terrible. Both the PP and PK are in the bottom 3rd of the league when it comes to how they are performing.
If they could have figured that out they probably could have went on an even better run here... but -9 on special teams over a 13 game stretch hurts a lot. Especially your powerplay being even during that time, can't give up the same amount of goals as you score on the PP.
They seem to understand how they need to play at 5v5 now... time to figure out special teams. And hopefully special teams will improve with some actual time to practice it with less time spent on the road now.

Made a really nice stick check on Marchessault late in the game, but got caught earlier way out of position to allow a Las Vegas 2-on-1.
Not a great game but probably the best one since the trade request.

I think what's more likely is they don't move them for just picks and prospects. But I think that was always wishful thinking by some on here. Zadorov or Tanev maybe but I think Lindholm and Hanifin deals would involve younger players who can play now.

I am more worried about the Flames re singing them then letting them walk TBH.

Lindholm is the one I worry about.
If they did re-sign Hanifin for around $7M it wouldn't be great, but he's 27 at the start of the deal and with a rising salary cap that wouldn't be a contract you'd be too worried about.
Lindholm for $9M+ when he will be 29 turning 30 in the first season of that contract is terrifying.

His poise with the puck in traffic is night and day from what we saw in October.
More games like that and the conversation quickly moves from middle six to top six.
|
He has been steadily improving, as the season has gone along and he gets more comfortable with his role. He has also been up and down the lineup, and with respect to TOI, which is really tough for consistency.
Here's an interesting stat: This is his production when he gets more than 14 minutes of ice time, vs when he gets less:
More (11 games): 4G, 4A, 8P, .727PPG, 16:36 AVG TOI
Less. (11 games): 1G, 1A, 2P, .182PPG, 11:49 AVG TOI
It's a tale of ice time. Which is a function of how well you're playing, which is a function of confidence and opportunity.
I think the lesson is that, given a top 6 role, he is a top 6 player (yes, small sample size so far, but that's the trend)

8 road games, 4 home games
changed time zones 8 times
average winning percentage of opponents: .568
with a better PP, this is definitely a playoff team

That puck died on impact. It is known that Tanev's face is etched out of granite.
His teeth? Not so much. Its a good thing he got Thanksgiving out of the way because the prospect of him gumming away at a Turkey Leg with one tooth is already grim, take that one tooth away and it gets dark as all hell.

Don't get me wrong, I think all the UFAs are great players, I just don't think this is the best version of the team we will see in 7 years.

It's like buying a car you can't really afford because you're predicting you're going to get raises before the loan is paid off.
All it takes is an unexpected decline in the rate of revenue increasing and there is no rising salary cap.

As others have pointed out, revenues are already high enough that the cap should be close to $100 million. It's been held down until the escrow debt is paid off, and after that it will only be allowed to rise 5% per year. Even if league revenue does not increase at all, the cap will go up at that rate for at least three years.

Unless there is another pandemic it will likely go up.
I think if not for the pandemic and the payback the cap would have been at $92M based on revenue this year.
Even in that environment I don't think a $7M Hanifin is terrible.
Now don't get me wrong - they should be trading all the UFAs. But he was the one that if they kept I'd be okay with it due to him being a bit younger, and not really having any d-men prospects in the pipeline.

The comment about no one having more than 6 goals…
They have a 12 goal scorer, a 10 goal scorer, a 9 goal scorer…
And they have 66 goals as a team, and we have 64. Essentially the same.
We just get contributions from all lines.

Fair enough. It doesn't really matter if the cap is $40 million or $140 million if all teams have to deal with it. The number that matters is the percentage of cap that you choose to give to a particular player.

We should be managing our money to get better than "not terrible" deals, like the kind of deals Tre gave to Lindholm and Hanifin way back when - those were good deals.
If he's open to 1-3 years, sure. I don't want to give out big term and big bucks to someone like that at age 27 who isn't in the class of Doughty, Pietrangelo, Hughes, Makar, Heiskanen, etc. Rather save those offers for our ELC players to avoid a future Tkachuk scenario.

Dube was good with the motor all night too.
Didn't get a lot done, but was impactful on the rush, forecheck and cycle.

Greer would be 6th on their team for goals. Pospisil would be T6th.
They simply do not understand what depth is. Or the consequences of playing 2 guys all the time - the rest of the team has no chance to contribute, and checks out.
