I will respectfully push back on the notion he was just flooding the forums with propaganda etc. I didn't interact with him too often and I can't say anything really bothered me personally but I could see how he would stir the pot to get under people's skin. Plenty of posters might also do that and some may think I do as well.
He posted plenty of articles and posts from the other side of the debate, whatever debate was happening and opposite side of whoever's beliefs are. A lot was also posts form mainstream media and articles that pointed out truths, facts and some opinion.
He stirred the pot and I enjoyed looking at some of the banter. Frankly we all need to learn to live in the world and try and get along. The guy was a classic homer for his side. It's an internet forum at the end of the day, not like he is blasting anybody from inside their house.

I don't post or really go in Fire & Ice anymore. It's more toxic than the politics threads.

Agreed. Ithe only 'clown' was the bad faith actor who was banned. He brought nothing to the table. Zero. Nada. Zilch.

He was far from the only poster on CP that behaves like that. Let’s be honest and admit that if Yoho expressed popular opinions in the same antagonistic, low-effort manner, few people would have a problem with him. It was his politics that enraged people.
Where he want too far was the personal attack on timbit.

I had a discussion with a person once who was arguing that Neil DeGrasse Tyson should accept a debate with a leader of the flat earth community. This person argued if the evidence is so strong then Neil DeGrasse Tyson should quickly destroy him in a debate and he should not be afraid of the challenge. I explained that we solved this hundreds of years ago and there is nothing to be gained from entertaining such nonsense.
Some things are just a waste of time, like everything this Yoho lunatic posted. The guy was nuts.

It had nothing to do with his politics, it's that he got information from, and shared sources that were largely bull#### spread by hateful racists and bigots, and somehow, that was permitted here. Sure, he'd sprinkle in Post Media as well when the opinion piece suited his narrative(or just the headline, as that was as much as he was capable of reading).
Yoho is gone, nothing of value will be lost.

there were so many users in the US politics thread who legitimately tried to have a good faith conversation with him, yet he made no efforts to actually engage in discussion. He never answered to anything, he just drove by with more tweets from questionable sources and disappeared again. So no, it wasn't just his politics, it was also his posting style and his refusal to actually discuss.

The problem here is that you and your friend are both right.
Yeah, DeGrasse Tyson could engage with flat earthers, and maybe he should, and yes he could debunk most of that crap almost immediately.
And flat-earthers are a lot like other elements of the lunatic fringe, they feel like they're the ones truly 'in the know' and aren't going to be swayed by any evidence anyways, so whats the point?
Flat-earthers are a group of people that want to feel special, they want to feel like they know a secret that nobody else knows, it becomes an element of their ethos, even though its just not true.
You cant reason someone out of a position they didnt 'reason' themselves into. Thats what makes conspiracy theorists infuriating.
But ignoring them or disregarding their beliefs or never engaging with them also fuels their beliefs. So in short, there is no winning.

I don't agree with your characterization of 'baying for his blood' because of his 'ideas'. Yoho didn't share ideas. He distributed propaganda, often from sources that had no journalistic standards and were acknowledged bad actors. Whenever Yoho was pressed to explain or provide context or to discuss 'ideas' he would not. He was essentially spamming the forum with lies. He managed to find a soft-spot in the forum rules. CP is a much better place without Yoho.
|
The journalistic standards of most stuff posted in the politics forums is poor. Half of the “sources” are just tweets by amateur political pundits. Nobody cares so long as those half-baked sources support their own political beliefs. And conversely, even the most well-sourced article will be dismissed or sneered at by people who disagree with its perceived political slant.
Nobody should expect CPs mods to enforce standards of journalistic legitimacy for sources cited in these threads. If tech companies that employ thousands of monitors can’t manage it, you’re not going to see it on a forum like this.

Damn, you’re right, he’s literally the only person on the board that expresses or shares articles stating a right wing opinion. This is a very insightful outlook on why he bothered people, and you can tell it’s true because every other poster with similar political views to Yoho gets a thread made about them.

How about just not allowing sharing trash posted by bigots and racists? We could call it the Corey Morgan Rule.

So presumably there would be a list of people and sources this would apply to. Who would make this list? What criteria would the mods use to determine who was on it? How big would it be? 5 people? 500? For instance, I don’t even know who Corey Morgan is. I expect most of CP’s mods don’t either.

Oh, I dunno maybe when people keep pointing it out? Adults should be able to manage this sort of thing.

I guess if one person doesn’t know who Cory Morgan is, that must mean must people don’t? That’s a stretch.
Anyway, as for points about arguments about posting opposing opinions - it’s not always necessary. There really are certain topics where the counterpoint is inherently garbage.

"I don't even know who Cory Morgan is"
I call bull####. The poster who said this is politically engaged enough and reads the political forums on this board enough to know who that is and what they bring (or more correctly, don't) to the table.

I don't know if I have any sort of brand or anything but I do know that a lot of people in the world these days could benefit from just relaxing a little bit when it comes to other people's opinion's and politics and how to deal with it.
Forget Yoho for a minute and know that there are enough people on this forum and other forums about every topic that have difficulty dealing with people they don't agree with. Yoho or any other poster or anybody else on social media or various platforms does absolutely nothing to my personal wellbeing but for OTHER people, they can't deal with it internally. They get their blood pressure worked up and just can't deal with disagreement in a civil matter, perhaps that even means our long lost friend Yoho perhaps.
Anybody who's family is from Europe will know how strongly they take politics and how seriously. Anybody who has spent any considerable time in Europe would know what the "discussions" are like about politics, sports and other matters of the day. They get heated, people spew their garbage, the lies, their BS, their sources, their opinions and more. The notion or thought that any of the local old guys of the local cafe would be banned for personal opinions, or their politics or their news sources or whatever normally does not happen. People don't care.
We live in a time in North America where the outrage, the cancel, the banning and the fake apologies and more is at another level. You have the type of people who get worked up over absolutely nothing and can't deal with it. Watching TV at the moment now in Europe, I can JUST imagine the meltdowns everybody would be having back home. People can't deal with it in North America.
The Greeks, Italian's and other's have a fairly common practice about motioning to their balls (even the women do it) "Write them off on your balls"
It's good advice actually because way too many people get worked up over other people, especially in North American, online culture. Probably why a huge portion of people are on medication for every anxiety these days when they were not in previous generations.

Maybe just no X/Twitter posting. The Alberta Reddit implemented that rule earlier this year and I think it helped a lot in terms of cutting down on useless posts and flooding of garbage information. I clicked into the Ukraine discussion to see what happened and the first thing I saw was basically a full page of X links posted by a user. No commentary or anything just post after post of multiple X links.
