I hope that’s not the Flames best plan.
If the flames sell their UFAs the way they should this year, I welcome 28 year old Makar to a long term contract in 2027 starting while he's 28 and it's not even a question IMO.

There are few things that suck the life out of our game than when we get what is commonly known across most hockey circles as a ‘powerplay’.

I think that’s their ceiling. Hence the “at best”.
Last season if just Markstrom was saving at his career average he allows 32 less goals in 59 starts. Now imagine how many of those where in the first 3 shots of the game. He let the first few shots in like 17 times last year.
That gutted us. Had he been as he was the year before he save 48 more goals, almost a goal a game. We probably push for the division title.

Without generational talent you need exceptional goaltending. Even with it, you need at least league average to push. Look at the stank Oil. When they get an even half decent save % they often win.

Wolf doesn’t do well unless he plays all the time. This kid can put in the minutes. Stellar goalie, size is NO issue

He’d be 29 just after the season started.

Not suggesting that I wouldn’t welcome him, but I sure hope that the Flames aren’t banking on signing guys reaching 30 or so to long term contracts.

In any event, it’s likely an unrealistic thought anyway. No particular reason for Makar to sign a rebuilding team at that time.

Adding a 29 year old Makar to a rebuilt core of top-3 picks is tantalizing.

But the idea that he’d ever leave Colorado for Calgary… I don’t see it.

He is a die-hard Flames fan growing up, watching the Iginla era (featuring Conroy). His family still lives here. He spends a fair amount of his off-season back home here. The Flames will be in the newest arena in the NHL, everything should be top of the line. A focus on youth in the coming years means they are hitting primes around the time Makar would be a UFA, putting them in a contending window. When he brought the Cup back here, he coordinated a whole fire department escort tour with the Cup down the Bow River and across downtown. He legit loves the city.

He won a Cup and a Conn Smythe in Colorado. He'll likely contend for another in his time there. His next contract will be at a time when most of the Avs core are in the twilight of their careers, meaning a large chunk of his next contract could see the Avs rebuilding or retooling as almost everyone on their current roster would be late 30's.

Why would he never leave Colorado? What more will he accomplish there? If there's any player where the timing and want to play af home makes sense, I'd say it's Makar.

McKinnon is a beast. I would pick him 10 times out of 10 over McDavid if I wanted to build a cup winner.

Sure is easy to complain sitting at home in your comfy chairs. 4 in 6, with absolutely brutal travel. The fact they didn't give up is a big plus. The Avs are a very well constructed team with talent. It is hard to beat them well rested.

Good - Coleman, kids.
Bad - goaltending, less than 10 shot halfway through the game.
Ugly - the freaking powerplay. OMG!

Yeah the PP is brutal.

You have to go back 12 games to find an outcome where the Flames powerplay amassed an expected goal total of 1.0 or more.

If you're under that line you're getting blanked often.

They are.

In those 11 games they total 4.54 expected goals in 50 minutes of hockey.

Cale Makar is not just a "guy." He is the best defenseman to play in decades, and arguably the best player in the world.

Only got to watch the third. Despite the loss, I had a smile on my face seeing this team pin the avalanche back and have them on their heels for most of the period.

Why would he leave MacKinnon et al?

They could take a run at breaking the Sid/Geno/Letang record of 18 straight seasons as teammates.

He’d be taking less money, less years, to come to a worse situation and a city that is basically Small Denver without gun violence.

It’s not impossible but it would be pretty anomalous.

Not a bad game to watch at all. Colorado is a great team and the Flames hung with them. Rookie goalie? Sure but he played well. There was a lot to like about the game. Lindholm’s line had a bit of a resurgence, the Kadri line was as usual, Huberdeau had a very nice assist (for those complaining about him yesterday, without him it’s a shutout) and even Vladar outside of two plays (albeit game losing ones) was just fine overall.

The best power play units in the league are comprised of three or more elite players.

The Calgary Flames have 0 elite players and don’t even use their best shot on PP1.

No excuses for Vladar - not with Wolf in the building.

AZ is in 6th and the Kraken are in 8th in powerplay. It can be done effectively.

Pittsburgh is one spot above Calgary. Washington is dead last.

One of the improvements I'm seeing with the Flames is their ability to compete with teams that play with pace despite they are not the fleetest of foot. Still room for getting better at it but they used to struggle mightily against those kinds of teams.

Have the opponents scored more often during a Flames powerplay during this stretch where they've only scored one PP goal?
