Yup, if you follow the Flames through these, from game to game, they are not consistent at all. After beating the Stars, which was supposed to be a 4.4% bump, their actual number only seemed to move from 36.6 to 36.9
(this is not directed at you in any way Cheese - you are doing God's work, and we are not shooting the messenger, just the people generating those numbers

Don't drop them. Even though they are wrong, they are still a conversation starter

Mangiapane has taken a lot of heat this year, and for the first few games it wasn't unwarranted, but it is time to recognize that he is playing pretty well now.
He is now 2nd in points , behind only Lindholm (also relentlessly maligned), and leads the team in even strength points, despite being 7th in TOI per game, and half the PP TOI of the other points leaders.
He is now on a 56 point pace (which is exactly what his contract should expect, and ahead of his career high), and 52 even strength point pace. He currently sits tied for 47th, league-wide for EVP.
(all numbers are for forwards only)

I find Mang and Raz both very frustrating players...both have immense ability and potential, and both do the most stupid things at the most inopportune times. Clearly they both know better, so don't really know why they play the way they do sometimes. Maybe it's that way for everyone and I just notice it more with them.
Mang reminds me of maybe (?) Sean Donovan. Overplays his hand sometimes. Think occasionally he should just make the simple play but he opts to do something way more complicated than necessary.
He IS playing better now though and seems to be a bit more settled as a "digger".

If only Mangiapane had Donovan's speed.

I like those charts. I find then an interesting insight into the world off odds-setting.

Don’t really care about the result. This is a fun team to watch and cheer on again. Looks like they are also enjoying playing hockey.

They factor in other things like XGF, XGA, etc. And the problem is that these types of stats are nowhere near being refined enough to be particularly useful.
The site you quoted simply runs outcomes. The calculated odds are a summation of all possible simulations. As simplistic as this is, it is very useful, if you understand statistics and outcomes.
Neither is close to being gospel, but one is much cleaner than the other.

Thanks for the explanation. Still feels wild that the Oil could have so much life still based on that model when they're performing worse than practically everyone else.

Second night of a back-to-back against a division leading team who by all measure ought to curb-stomp the Flames? Watch the Flames eke out a victory. And when the Flames play the Wild and Devils in a couple weeks, watch 'em get their teeth kicked in.

So what? Don't rationalize scenarios wherein the Flames ought to win tonight, jg13. As soon as you start to believe they can and should win, as soon as they get your hopes up, that's when they'll fail you. Haven't you learned by now that the Flames exist to dash hopes?
