Isn't this the backstory to Detroit Rock City?

Edit: and I just read that the show was cancelled due to illness. Even more unfortunate.

read that the type of car in the crash was previously recalled for issues with the accelerators getting stuck.

How terrified those poor border guards must have been.

Would modern start button cars shut off when you hit the button?

Nope. I had a problem with my car that put it in limp mode on the highway. I knew if I turned it off and on it would be fine, and tried to do it while coasting. I couldn't shut it off until it was stopped, and had to navigate my way through traffic going 50km/h faster than me to get over to the shoulder.

Best bet with a push button ignition I would think would be to try shift it into neutral and let the engine race and hopefully you can brake to a stop.

Must be vehicle/brand specific. I definitely turned off my car while driving once. Had to pull over to turn it back on, as it won't turn on without being in park.

Way to shift the conversation off the topic.

We need to shift gears on the topic currently and remember that people died here. It is not a joking manor.

In an old Saturn I had for a while, I a couple times somehow hit the key with my knee while on the highway and turned the car off. After the first time when I was surprised, I was able to shift the car to N, and restart the car while travelling 100 KPH without issue. Not sure if that would work with the newer button shift / button start cars.

Either way, the button shift cars can definitely manually be shifted to N while still accelerating, which as others have said would just leave the engine reving and the car slowing.

The accelerator getting stuck doesn’t matter. Breaks on cars can over power the engines. All that is needed is to hit the breaks.

This is likely similar to the Toyotas where the most likely cause was the user mistaking gas pedal for the break.

I highly recommend the revisionist history podcast about these incidents! It’s one of the best ones!

that depends on the vehicle.... my '89 pickup had a sticky accelerator pedal. last summer i'm going down the road, take my foot off the gas and the truck just keep going faster and faster. naturally i hit the breaks, but becuz the breaks are part of the vacuum system and the carb was stuck open the breaks were just rock hard... so pretty much no breaks. i was going to turn off the truck but then i'd lose power steering, so i threw it in neutral, had the engine race like crazy, but was able to get to the side of the road and get stopped (thankfully i was going up an incline).
definitely a little nerve rattling!

Should be in the GG thread, and not normally a nitpicker on grammar/spelling, but I'm seeing it all the time on youtube now. It's brakes!

Kind of hits close to home, I know people who were friends with this couple. Regardless of why it happened, it is a tragic event, a couple lost their lives.

I was thinking about how ####ty it must be to know these people. Their tragic death was turned into nonsense and then everyone basically breathed a sigh of relief… pretty brutal way to go, on top of the accident itself.

My first car was a civic and since I was doing lots of highway driving I had an aftermarket cruise system installed. Basically it had this module installed and a physical wire was connected to controlled the accelerator cable. One day I passed a semi on the highway and after passing I realized the car kept gaining speed. I pressed the brakes but that pretty much only stopped me from gaining speed and did not slow me down at all. I thank my lucky stars I had a 5 speed so I shifted into neutral and the car screamed like a banshee so I shut it off and coasted to a stop. I opened the hood and sure enough the cable had wrapped around itself in a way that essentially gave my car full throttle.

Scared the s**t out of me. And that was with a 117HP gutless car. I could not even imagine that happening in a Bentley.
