Donating Blood
With Canadian Blood Services ramped up marketing campaign, I'm just wondering how many on CP regularly donate blood?

I used to donate on a regular basis until I got bloodwork done. Still have a few months before I can donate again. I think among the older generation there is a bit of a stigma with blood services due to the various scandels of the 1980s and early 90s with HIV and Hep A,B, and C infections.

It is something I have really would like to do, I have even called the Canadian Blood services and set up and appointment but something came up the day my appointment was scheduled and I have made the effort since…I know some people who do it and they are really enjoy the whole process and say that it is very easy and convienent

I have a rare blood type . . . . . I'm over 20 donations for the last few years . . . .
It's a great weight loss programme. You lose a pound a half!!!
But you can't run for about a week afterward without keeling over . . . . so I give less in the summer.
It's the only place where I have to explain a pulse rate under 50 beats per minute . . . .

I used to all the time, but shortly after moving to Calgary I stopped. Mostly because the hours they were open never really fit into my schedule. Last time I checked they were only open one evening per week; and that happens to be their busiest time.

They refused a co-worker who had 48bpm when we did the Blood Bus a couple months ago.

I used to give regularly (3 -4 times a year) but they have a waiting period of 1 year after getting a tattoo so I haven't given any blood in a couple of years and it will be another year of waiting again

The main clinic is open more than one night per week now. I know for sure they are open Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as those are the evenings I donate.
J pold - I really enjoy it as well. In fact it has stopped me from getting any more tattoos or piercings because I enjoy it so much.

I used to give a lot, but I stopped because everytime I went my irregular heart beat set off sirens, and I ended up in one of those stupid backless robes in a cardiologists office with electrodes attached to my chest.
And I don't want to hear about surgical options where they ram a catheter up my main artery in my leg, snake it up to my heart and start shorting out nerve endings again.
Nor do I want to be on pills for the rest of my life.

Ya - I avoid it because of that. Im still not fully convinced either that it's foolproof.
I get grief all the time - but Im just not okay with it...including organ donations.

Same thing happened to me but after getting it investigated by a cardiologist and an MRI it was nothing to worry about and I got cleared to donate anyway. It often isn't irregular enough to set of sirens (needs to be at least 10 irregular bpm to set it off).

I can understand those concerns. I would think that when donating you have pretty much zero chance of getting anything because it's streile needles used on you. The problems were that they weren't able to properly screen some of the blood going through and a few unlucky patients that needed the blood were the ones infected.
Sometimes I see first time donors faint while donating, however it's all mental.

I think they made it difficult now that any visit to Mexico means you need to wait a year to donate.
And when I go there I'm sometimes told I am getting borderline high blood pressure, but it is just "white coat syndrome" - if I know a needle is coming I get stressed and my blood pressure goes up.

I go every time I'm eligible now, which is a stretch as I'm not a huge fan of needles.
Cow, I'm surprised it affects you for longer than a 12 hour period. I'm good to go for physical activity the day after I donate.

If I'm reasonably physically fit, my heart rate should be under 50 beats per minute . . . . has been forever and still is.
So after they get a startled look on their faces, I just tell them I run, bike and what not and they relax and shuffle me off to a table to be drained.
Cow, I'm surprised it affects you for longer than a 12 hour period. I'm good to go for physical activity the day after I donate.
Well, I can certainly go hiking or even biking but running for any reasonable distance is pretty much out for about three or four days . . . . or you can try it but you're tuckered out pretty fast. Also, I'm a geezer.

Yeah, I gave blood on Monday and I was back running fine on Wednesday. But I definitely noticed a difference... surprises me as well.
Regarding the pulse rate, mine was 42 bpm on Monday and they still took my blood.

I've tried numerous times but am always ruled out for one reason or another. I'm always so blown away by the stringency of their criteria that I wonder how anyone is in good enough health to donate blood on a regular basis.
I was ruled out for my asthma the last time I tried, and I've since given up ambition for it.

The person from work was training to play in a fairly competitive basketball league, so it is his athleticism that pushed his heart rate down. I guess they just weren't sure and wanted to play it safe.
My wife won't give anymore. The last time (about her 3rd visit) she blacked out while donating. She won't even consider it again. But I still go. Perhaps a CP blood drive is in order? It makes for a cheap buzz if you go for beer afterwards.
