The Simpsons Phenomenon . . . .
We're coming up to the 400th episode of the Simpsons, some 19 years later and a licencing agreement with Kenyan tribesman among the billions generated every year . . . . .
A look back then and where we are now and where the show is going.

Awesome. They are so lucky they have the stability in terms of freedom to do what they want, and none of the voice actors is fed up with doing it. Thats what would kill the simpsons, if the voice actors bailed.

I didn't realize they've released Season 9. I have the first five, but with school, student loan, etc, my disposable income stopped going to purchasing the box sets.
On that note . . . you can discuss amungst yourselves who's going to buy me which season for my birthday

The Simpsons is The Flintstones in excess. For those of us that were alive to experience both, there is a bit of deja vu IMO. Amazing talents made both these shows possible. What is interesting is that both shows were cultural icons during their day. Pretty amazing to observe.

I've never really understood the incredible appeal of the Simpsons. But then, I don't understand the appeal of television in general.

For some reason, I picture you as Phil Hartman's "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer" saying that:
""Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and was later thawed by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me! When I see images on the TVs at the country club, I wonder, do little people live in there? I get so upset, I hop out of my Range Rover, and run across the fairway to the clubhouse, where I get Carlos to make me one of those martini tails he's so famous for, to soothe my primitive caveman brain."

The show wasn't quite the same after Phil Hartman died. It's still got it's moments, but mainly because of Homer. Back in it's hay day, I would say Homer and all the hartman characters made the show.

Both the Flintstones and the Simpsons were somewhat unique - although less so now - in that they were cartoons aimed at an adult audience.
Here's to Lance Riprock, Daisy Granite and The Mangler!!!

I can't count how many times those Troy McLure videos have saved me from impending death. The "Don't Do What Donny Don't Does" could teach us all a lesson or three.
Edit: My mistake. I just remembered that "Don't Do What Donny Don't Does" was a book. Troy did teach me everything I needed to know about DNA though.
Timmy: What does DNA stand for?
Troy: Uhh...
*The End*

I remember seeing it on the Tracy Ullman show, before it became popular. Seems like my interest in it is waning the last few years. I used to watch the new episode on Sunday nights religiously. I have seen quite a bit of it though over the years.

I recall when it initially became a series and some groups tried to get it pulled since it was a cartoon of questionable morals.

In the 1992 US predential election campaign, George Bush said that he wished American families were "more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons."
I used to be a huge (HUGE!) fan of the show, but it's really lost its lustre over the years. Seasons 3-7 remain some of the best television ever made, though. You'd be very hard-pressed to find 22 minutes of television funnier than "Last Exit to Springfield".

I'm one who thinks it's been on too long, lost it's lustre, etc. But the one thing they did right was not having someone else voice Troy McClure or Lionel Hutz (aka Miguel Sanchez ). All their appearances are comedy gold.

Agreed. I essentially stopped watching after Season 12. However, I don't really care it if ends or not. Can't really complain about having entertainment available that I don't have to pay for
And I also agree that Phil Hartman was one of the Simpsons greats.
Lionel: And so ladies and gentlement of the jury, I rest my case.
Judge: Mr. Hutz, do you know that you're not wearing any pants?

My sister and I are Simpsons freaks. We quote it ad naseum, which drives people we know nuts cause they usually don't know what we are talking about. It has definately lost its edge the last few years. I've never really hated an episode of The Simpsons before, but the Christmas episode with Gil this season was the worst episode I've ever seen. It has its moments still but is just not the same. Even though the one this week when Santa's Little Helper became a police dog had me and my cousins killing ourselves during Mother's Day dinner on Sunday.

Once again, I find myself of the same opinion. The show has its humourous moments, but I don't get its iconic status. But then again, I downright hated Seinfeld, so my tastes in entertainment obviously aren't in synch with the majority.

Coming from a guy that goes by the handle 'Ford Prefect', I'd say that makes sense.
