at 28, it makes a ton of sense for him to try and find a longer deal. Heck, his old D partner Gudbranson got 4 years for some reason, so I understand it. At the same time, Z is just not a guy you lock in for ~5 years. I like him, but he's a #4/#5 type of defenseman and I'm glad that Conroy apparently has no appetite to hand term to players like this.

Yes - he wants the Gudbranson deal and he should. There is probably some team out there that will give it to him because he brings 'grit' like Gudbranson.

Why haven’t they done it before?
It’s not like he is available for the 1st time
Maybe they do watch him?
He is ok for bottom pairing. The moment you pay 4M+ , his value is negative

I mean he has ONE right now so its probably a safe bet

The Flames signed Gudbranson to a 1 year deal worth $1.95m - after he basically ran out of Vancouver for being terrible. Then the next summer Columbus gave him a 4 x 4 deal. Why do they do it? I don't know - but that is what you're hoping for if you are Zadarov.

Yeah, he is in a position here where he can definitely afford to explore the market. Even if he doesn't find any takers on a four- or five-year deal he could probably pick from several options in the same ball-park as what the Flames are offering.

It's going great for Gudbranson. He's a 32-year old journeyman who is guaranteed another $11 m over the next three years.

I think big Z is better than Gudbranson besides the size. Big Z has more speed and can jump up into offensive zones whereas Gudbranson is more stay-at-home type. In terms of liability in the D-zone, I think every Flames D-men and forward not backchecking for the past 2 years have been guilty or sloppy TBH.

Well, that was stupid by Columbus.
He can hope but I don’t think people are lining up to sign a bottom pairing dman for 4M+ long term
Yeah I know he thinks he is a top dman lol

That’s what you get though when you fill out your roster via free agency.

Zadorov max deal should be like the Engelland deal. 3 years. Cap is higher now, and Zadorov is more highly thought of so certainly would expect a higher AAV.
But I love it if Flames are sticking to 2year offer.. If he wants more, has to come at a discount.

I got so much pushback in the offseason when I was arguing we should move on from Z. I was getting so much pushback because he said he wanted to stay here. Many were arguing we should keep him ahead of Hanifin!
Anyways I'm glad you guys came back around.
Good human, lots of great tools, and a luxury to have on your 3rd pairing. One we can't afford in a cap world.

Well you’re leaving out a pretty big thing in him openly requesting a trade…

I'm of the belief Zadorovs trade request was purely because he heard nothing from the team on a new deal (until recently I suppose since one of them Twitter dudes said they've finally offered a 2 year deal).
I don't necessarily blame Zadorov for asking for a trade if the team hadn't even engaged before then.
I still don't blame him either. Team looks to be on the wrong g end of the contention curve.
I don't know, I like Zadorov, I believe him when he said he wanted to be in CGY long term. But at the same time, I don't necessarily think he's the right piece to anchor to a re build or re tool either.

Two years for Z is fair, so far in his career no team has been willing to go longer than that. Will probably be the case when he hits free agency as well especially if he's looking in the 5-6 year range.

I also think Zadorov may well change his mind, for whatever reason, as the team finds it's footing and other moves take shape, and, his value is evelauted by his agent making inquiries as all agents do.

The Flames need picks they can turn into players for the future. They don't need an overpaid 3rd pairing guy for a few seasons while they miss the playoffs.

Yeah! we need to re-establish our rep as the weakest team in NHL history again!
