Russ gonna work himself into the MVP race if they go from 1-5 to the playoffs. I mean he hasn't been great, but there really isn't a true MVP frontrunner at this point so it's pretty open.

Today it would be CJ Stroud, CMC, Tyreek Hill, and AJ Brown as the top candidates for MVP. But this stretch run is where QB's make their move. So I expect Hurts, Lamar Jackson to join the race. If Hurts ends up besting Mahomes, Purdy, Allen in head to head matchups here he'll be the guy winning.

The test of being a successful NFL QB is maintaining a high level after NFL defenses have had enough time to pick apart several game film tapes. Sure looked like the clock struck 12 for Dobbs.

Was hoping to come to this thread today to see Brandon Staley has been fired, but apparently Spanos will continue to stick with the clown show. Saw a Chris Long pod cast where he discussed the Chargers and their "Chargering". He was bang on. terrible franchise

I would think he's going to be fired at the end of the season but if that's the case then why not fire him now for the coach bump? How much more does Spanos need to see as they allocated the third most money on defense at $97 million and it's been bad despite that being Staley's specialty.

They are 4-6, last place in the division, and really would likely need to go 6-1 in the final 7 games to make the playoffs.
Why would you want the coach bump?
They are in line for a top 10 pick if they keep status quo and just hit reset in the offseason.

Yeah but I don't think organizations think about tanking nearly as much as fans think they do. Sure there are some teams that have clearly tanked but I guarantee there's not a person in the Chargers organization today that's looking at riding out failure into a top 10 pick. Jobs are always on the line.

Staley should have been fired before the Chargers made it back to the locker room when they lost to the Jaguars in the playoffs

But also think there are lots of other things organizations look at too.
Generally more quality coaches will be available come the offseason anyways.
Why pay Staley to not coach the rest of the season and have to pay somebody else for the remaining 7 games.
If you were going to fire Staley they should have done it last offseason, or after the 0-2 start, or after they were 2-4. Really no sense in doing it now unless you are set on who the head coach will be next season and you bring him in now to start implementing his systems in advance of next season.

This is pretty accurate, IMO.
I think Purdy can put himself into the running if he's able to continue playing at the level he showed yesterday. Jackson is well into the race right now, too. Moreso than Mahomes at the moment. Stroud is great, but I feel he may struggle a bit in the back third of the season as the pressure rises and teams get more film on him. He threw 3 picks yesterday in his worst game as a pro.

Clearly you move one of the assistants to take over on an interim basis like the Raiders just did. Kellen Moore has interviewed for head coach jobs and may be a candidate if Staley gets fired. Remember it's the defense letting the team down, not the offense. It seems like a perfect opportunity to see how handles the job before committing $$$ and term.

That's the thing though, almost every recent season has had a clear cut frontrunner or two by this point. Last year Mahomes and Hurts were clearly the top two, Rodgers was clearly the frontrunner the two years before that, Lamar and Mahomes before that etc...In recent history this is almost an unprecedented race in terms of volume of candidates. Talking about Dobbs and Russ is kind of a joke, but also not outlandish either because no one has separated themselves yet. We probably all laugh at the prospect of Dak being MVP, but if the Cowboys win that division and get the #1 seed then Dak is probably close to a lock at that point. It is wide ass open for anyone to win it. Winner tonight probably gets into favorite or close territory.
Like take Stroud as an MVP candidate. He has been much better than anyone could have expected, yet if Boyd catches an easy TD pass and the Bucs don't meltdown in the final 40 seconds of that game the Texans are 4-6 and Stroud isn't even a fringe candidate. Yet here he is, he'll be put as the frontrunner by some people. I suppose nothing sums up the mediocre state of the league right now as basically one minute of game action being the difference between a guy having no shot at MVP and being right in the thick of it.
I continue to contend that it should be Garrett, maybe even unanimously, if the Browns make the playoffs, and especially if they win the division. He's having an absurdly good season, without him they are 3-7 right now. Instead they can put out below replacement QBs all season and control their destiny for winning the division.

That hit was suspect when it happened, I was surprised no flag came out. That’s about it for him
