A longer look at what?

Even in the wins we have not once this season looked like a team that can compete with the top teams in the league. All this season has done, the good games and bad games, is clearly show we are not close to competing, we are not a player or two away from competing for the Cup.

It isn't surprising because this is how the team always acts and there was plenty of fears that hiring guys from within was a plan that involved trying to maintain the status quo, but still annoying to hear.

Yeah this team will be good enough to tread water, but the only reason they're even doing that now is the boost from the kids. How do we get more of that? Sell.

I sure hope that the information that Dis has is based on the team letting these guys figure their games out so it boosts their trade value. That being said and has been pointed out, waiting until deadline is fraught with risk as the number of buyers will drop and we don’t know what the other sellers will do. Look back to the summer when we thought teams would be lining up for ufas. Then the buyouts flooded the market with players that were available for free. Hope conroy strikes when time is right so we aren’t left alone at the altar like we have been before.

Yeah, my only hope is that they are putting that messaging out to everyone and implying they need a good trade to sell anyone right now.

This is highly concerning in my opinion. This post fuels the narrative the Flames don’t really have a plan moving forward and they are still hoping that somehow players will figure it out and they may still be all in with this roster. Are they hoping the team plays there way into Lindholm and Hanifin getting their massive 8 year extensions?

When the report came out the contract talks were being shelved I hoped it meant that the team was planning to move all their UFA’s and that was strengthened by the report from Lebrun that they were open for business.

By "long look" I would hope they mean waiting on other desperate teams to acquire their players due to injuries or simply trying to bolster their team. There better not be any extensions from our pending UFAs, they are the key to jumpstarting a retool and allowing the youngsters to play. Anything outside of this plan is incompetent managing of the team that stems from the ownership.

Listening to the 32T pod. Lots of Jackets talk. Friedman did mention the Jackets have ramped up their efforts to get a center. “Trying really hard to find a centre but this is an organization coming to a crossroads”

Rebuild the rebuild? I guess this year might not be the year to buy but at some point they got to start trying to win.

The Blue Jackets are 3rd last in the league by point percentage and are 7 games below .500

If their goal is to have success this season, they may have already run out of time. To make the playoffs, they would have to be about 22 games over .500 in their final 63 games, which would be an insane turnaround.

For this reason, I'm betting that they're more interested in players with term. Especially considering their difficulties in extending pending UFAs in the past.

Did the Blue Jackets actually rebuild? Or were they just bad enough for a couple seasons to draft in the top 5?

I guess you could consider dealing Foligno and Savard at the deadline in 2021 rebuilding moves. Then they went and signed Gaudreau a year later. So pretty short rebuild.

Friedman - The Flames have a lot going on. Tanev, Zadorov, Hanifin, and don’t forget Lindholm. Teams are trying to push Calgary along. Conroy sending the message we won’t do something because the player asks. It is a big challenge to immediately grant a trade request. Can’t rush judgement and not let people be able to do it when they want.

There are teams trying to move this along. All 4 players will get better returns if extensions are involved. Didn’t get the sense they have given teams permission but some teams are talking about it. The Leafs and Dallas will be a player in this. The Islanders are around this. Arizona for Hanifin. Toronto still wants Z and Tanev

Lots of options for Calgary not sure the timetable

If you are selling a used car does it make more sense to tell buyers “I really really need to sell now - what can I get from you” versus “Ahhh, I dunno, maybe I will keep it, it’s still good - maybe I’d sell at a really good price”?

The jackets rebuild has them using the same blueprint that the Oilers have been using. Included, is paying big for free agents that don't work.

The Coyotes, unlike the other interested teams, have some cap space. About $3.6 mill.

I think it makes sense to deal with them first - the Flames wouldn't have to take much salary back. Hanifin would have a lot of value if the Coyotes could negotiate an extension. Hanifin also has decent production to begin the year, so his present value remains high.

Once most of Hanifin's cap hit is cleared, the Flames would have much more flexibility in dealing with teams like Toronto and Dallas. This flexibility would allow the Flames to really get a lot of value.

Would love some of the prospects out of Arizona . Problem is would hanifin sign an extension with a team playing in a 5000 seat arena with no other arena deal in site? Yes it’s a nice place to live but what happens if they move because of no arena?

Preface: I know it's a freaking video game, but a couple of days ago I was on franchise mode with Calgary and was able to do the following trade:

To Dallas:
Lindholm 50%
Tanev 50%

for

Johnston
Marchment
Harley
2024 2nd
2025 1st

Might look like highway robbery for Calgary, but we do take on Marchment who still has 2 years left of 4.5m as a mediocre player. They do lose on Johnston, but they do get a RD upgrade and Lindholm/Hintz would be a good 1-2 punch down the middle.

Could I see this trade going down in real life? Absolutely not. Johnston has insane value, especially when he has an additional year on that ELC. Dallas wouldn't move him unless they were going for a franchise-altering upgrade, which I don't see Lindholm as that. This trade does make them a better team though.

Hot take. You could try and play that you're the smartest guy in the room but every buyer out there knows you're going through an ugly divorce, the bank has called your mortgage, and you just lost your job. You need to make a deal and everyone knows it. It's not like every GM in the league doesn't know the Flames situation and player agents are not out there doing everything they can to get their clients moved. Conroy is not hoodwinking anyone.
