The problem is a couple more wins and the ownership will actually think this.

Here's some more data I found: - There are currently 79 top 5 picks playing in the NHL. (I included guys like Landeskog that might return and P. Kane, but not Price that's on LTIRetierment).
- 20 first overall
- 16 second overall
- 16 third overall
- 14 fourth overall
- 13 fifth overall
- The picks range from 2003 (Fleury) to 2023 (Bedard)
- Team percentages:
- 13/32 teams have first overall picks on their rosters - 40.6%.
- 21/32 teams have first or second overall picks - 65.6%
- 24/32 teams have a third overall pick or higher(including CGY) - 75%
- 25/32 teams have a fourth overall pick or higher - 78.1%
- 29/32 teams have a fifth overall pick or higher - 90.6%
- The three teams without a top 5 pick in the NHL: Islanders, Flyers, Sharks
- 6 teams with only 1 top 5 pick: Bruins, Red Wings, Predators, Blues, Canucks, Jets.
- One team stands out with 7 top 5 picks in Colorado - I have a hard time classifying 3 of them as difference makers: Johnson, Drouin, Johansen, and Landeskog is on LTIR.
- It is followed by Columbus, Edmonton, Florida, LA, and Toronto with 4 picks each.

And it's quite helpful data, too. It puts it in perspective to know just how common it actually is for teams to have those top picks.

The Islanders and Sharks should get a chance to fix that real soon now.
For the Sharks, it will be a drop in a very large empty bucket.

Reminds me of the Simpsons real estate episode.
The right house for the right person!
The right house is the house for sale. The right person is anyone.
If you get someone to meet your asking price, take it. Don’t wait and try to drive up the price and risk injury and getting nothing. It would be so Flames to have it play out this way.

I would like to see the same graph for top 4 or 5 picks. Maybe it will look the same, but those would be higher chance of game changers.

Sell high Flames,
You're winning the battles but not the war. Now is the time to ship a few guys when their value looks strong.
Please dear lord anything but 17th.

weegar - Rasmus
Gilbert - deSimone
Oesterle - X

That is a backend that almost guarantees a top 5 pick.

Sell Zad, Hanifin, and Lindstrom...
Anyone else think we should try to hold onto Tanev. We will need D, and he is a warrior who is proven as a mentor to rookies (much like Backlund). I would be happy if he was back on a 2-3 year deal.
At worst, sell him, but try to bring him back as a UFA.

Oesterle would be a solid tank commander. Judging by the impact of Zary and Pospisil, the likes of Poirier and Solovyov would probably have the opposite effect.

I'd rather sell Lindholm and draft Lindstrom

All UFA's are available imo.
Tanev is one hit away from months of rehab, the guy plays so hard I think its a matter of time before he gets injured and we lose him for nothing.
I'd love to take a shot at Wahlstrom, he's a shoot first big RW.

I think if he can bring back a 2nd or similar value that is more valuable than anything he can bring to on the ice or off the ice. This isn't a shot at him as he has been very good for us and in the offseason if we signed him back as a FA great, but we need to maximize assets and he seems like a guy that could bring a valuable piece back.

I have no problems with the Flames winning games so long as they trade away all of their UFAs.
If the Kids can hang, if markstrom Kadri and Huberdeau bounce back, that is awesome.
Trade Zadorov, Hanifin, Tanev, Lindholm.
Hell, If the price is right trade anyone over the age of 23.

For sure... but humour me for a second. What if the Flames manage to go 2-1-1 (or higher) during their upcoming DAL-COL-VGK-DAL nghtmare stretch?
I've been joking about us being buyers now, but if they can pick up two wins against NYI, SEA or NSH and then an above .500 Pts% against DAL-COL-VGK-DAL, then... I mean... would that not finally make us the team many thought we were supposed to be?
Ps. I'm not trying to insinuate that I was one of the people who thought we'd be good. I really wasn't, but I'm 100% hungry for a bit ol' steaming plate of crow to dine on.

Even if the Flames do claw into a playoff spot, then what? get bodied in the first round? There is no chance they can compete against the likes of the Avs or Vegas who will be their first matchup.

I actually think that if we're selling we should look into moving Andersson this season/next offseason.
I think Andersson has a ton of value with his current contact. I don't want the flames to lose most of the value like they did with Lindholm/Hanifin/Toffoli by waiting until his UFA year.
If we're rebuilding, I don't think Andersson fits the window.
I agree that we still need some vets on the team, but I would hope that the Flames take on some garbage contracts and futures like Arizona and Montreal did.
