As far as picks vs prospects… In general, I would take any player picked in the first 20 picks of the 2023 draft in place of a first round pick in 2024. That’s a big ask from any team so it’s not likely. If those players are not available then prioritize first round picks.
Then let your scouts swing for the fences in the draft with the picks. Even if they are high risk/high reward players… don’t worry about size or two-way game as the biggest priority… target high-end offensive skill as the biggest priority… with forwards and defensemen as well.
Never a fan of drafting guys that project to be 3rd line centres… the bottom half of the line up can be built through trades/free agency if necessary. The draft is the place to get dynamic game breakers.

I think you said it all here. He’s got a great skill set, instincts, and can play a moderately good two-way game when he’s on. I think his intensity wanes at times, and for my money- he doesn’t put up enough offense for an offensive player. Who knows though, the coach there had problems with quite a few young Jackets players this season. Perhaps he could use a change.

I am not sure if it was mentioned, but rumour has it that the Canucks are talking to Phil Kessel.

Its so demoralizing that were going to lose a pick to Montreal heading into a rebuild.

It was an extra pick. A surplus pick. The only thing it hurts is the outlook on the Huberdeau-Tkachuk trade (and it was already a landslide loss to begin with).
They've lost nothing. They have 1sts every year moving forward.
And they'll acquire more before the draft.

We can just continue to hate on Treliving for putting this team in the horrible position they are in. I am fine with that.

What's terrible about it? It remains a fact that the Flames have as many first-round picks now as they had before the Tkachuk and Monahan trades.

The Canucks are looking into whether or not payment of Hot Dogs will count against the Cap.

Not only that, but at the time of the trade the Flames weren't expected to be in the situation they are currently in. The summer of Brad had most people thinking that the Flames lost two stars but retooled to keep their window open.

As opposed to what? Looking for reasons to be depressed about past moves we can do nothing about now?
Crying over spilled milk is counterproductive.

First of all surplus is a terrible word to describe it, that's not how picks work. We traded a valuable piece and got that 1st in return for it, then utterly wasted it. No, crying over spilled milk doesn't do anything, but pretending it's okay is pretty silly too.

If we have to give Markstrom to someone, let it be to make the division tougher on Edmonton and Vancouver.
