Without the star player, the value of the team goes down substantially probably so I would say the latter.

I thought for sure they'd go after a top tier coach. This move seems like they're intentionally trying to tank and get that #1 pick again. What an embarrassing franchise.

i saw this pic this morning and giggled...
 garlic by bc-chris, on Flickr
my first thought was - ha! ha! oiler upper management must have seen this pic and it hit them... we need a coach that can play 5D garlic chess (how many D's are we up to now when talking chess? i don't know)
they went out and got the garlic, unfortunately they don't have any D and then they realized the board was set up for checkers... not chess
i wonder when drawing up plays on the white board if they now use light and dark garlic to represent the players?

Something interesting I heard on "Got Yer Back", includes a bit left out between these two quotes. At the end of Holland's answer, before Jackson answers, Holland adds: ...obviously Jeff's got a long relationship with Connor, you can probably talk about that"
Was that Holland taking a shot at the only reason Jackson has been given this job?
Also, when they asked Knoblauch if the coaching duties (including Gulutzan running the power play, I imagine, now that Coffey's onboard) will change, he looks at Holland and Holland answers for him.
This is messed up.
