The only plausible explanation is that Katz offered McDavid a percentage of the team if he stays in Edmonton.
Like how Gretzky and Lemieux ended up with part-ownerships of NHL teams.
So McDavid gets to call the front office shots....

I find it funny that both Alberta teams are now coached by their captain's former junior coach (I know the circumstances are very different).
Obviously, they saw how well it's going in Calgary and decided to copy the Flames.
The Flames did the same with Don Hay back in 2000 too, with equal success.

Brent and Darryl were both technically available many times when the Oilers were looking for coaches the last 20 years, and far more suitable than any Oilers choices.

I was thinking about this the other day. Duane and Brent played for the Islanders dynasty teams in the 80’s, which probably led to a hatred of the Oilers (see also: Canada Cup ‘84). Wonder if that bled into the family at all. Strange that Duane worked for them, out of all the brothers.
Darryl was also going up against them in the conference finals with Chicago in the early-to-mid 80’s.

I think it’s great business and shows how much contempt that organization has for their fans. They know their fans are stupid and they want to milk every dollar out of them. It’s like taking candy from a baby.

No way the Oilers would even consider a Sutter, they don't believe in Oilers hockey. No chance McDavid would allow a coach who expects him to play in his own end. Not sure why anyone would even think they might do that
