Yeah. Probably a 3rd with no retention or long term dumps coming back

He’s better than what they have and he costs 2.6M more than Vanacek (who has one less year). So Flames take Vanacek for cap reasons (maybe they play him over Vladar or maybe they buy out or waive him). But the Flames need a decent return. Package with Zadorov and get someone good (and young) and one of Nemec or Filmon?

If you could trade Markstrom for that you do it everyday of the week. He's great when he's great but is wildly inconsistent.
I honestly doubt any that team in the league would be willing to take him on without serious retention or value coming back.

I don’t know. Have you looked at the state of goaltending in the league. Multiple playoff bound teams have terrible goaltending. Might be a GM that takes a gamble and Flames don’t need to dump him. It would surprise me but I don’t think it’s super outlandish

With the other options rumoured out there being Binnington, Hart and ? I think Markstrom, if he were willing, could easily be dealt.
Instead of retention I think the Flames take back a bad deal for another team to make the deal work. Markstrom is not on the Kadri/Hubredeau level where his deal is both an overpay and way too long. It isn't perfect but the money is likely right where it should be and with two years left after this it isn't a boat anchor deal.
The biggest issue with trading Markstrom isn't finding a team its him being willing to move.

If Marky goes on the market, we should get an excellent package, no matter what his stats are. There are so many teams looking for competent goaltending.
If we deal with Jersey, I would hope Mercer is part of the package coming back. 2 points in 13 games and -6, despite decent ice time.

It feels like if the message is the team is pivoting then I can see quite a few guys being open to move. Really the only true veteran pieces that will be stuck here are Huberdeau, Kadri, Backlund, Coleman, Andersson, and Weegar. I think Backs remains committed for the rest of his deal and the other guys would be tough to move up front. For the back end Weegar is locked up and Rasmus would likely still be part of the retool.
One thing that made the Flames last rebuild go smoothly was having a top defensive pair from the previous regime and it looks like that could be the case this go around

Obviously top 5 picks aren't a guarantee to get those level of players but it is the best way to do so. If we aren't going for a full tear down and giving ourselves a shot at that level of talent we are headed towards the current situation, although a weaker version, where we have good not great talent and can't compete with the teams that do.

I'm a little late to the discussion but IMO both Zary and Coronato can turn into 1st line forwards. I also think that Ruzicka and Pelletier have top 6 potential, and Wolf is a #1G.
That said, it's hard to project with prospects. I thought Mangiapane is a 1st line forward after he scored 35. I also thought Dube might take a step this year. My point is that a lot has to go right for anyone to become a top player in the league, but several of our prospects have the right toolset.

Anyone can become 1st line players, not sure either one has shown that is likely. I don't think we can or should go into this rebuild thinking that Coronato and Zary are first line players, especially first line players for a team that is competing for the Cup which should be the goal we have.
Edit: Could they be the third player on a stacked first line with two other elite players, sure. What I am talking about is looking at the top teams like Colorado and TB they have MacKinnon, Rantanen, Kucherov, Point, Stamkos that is what we don't have on our team or in our prospect pool. I don't think anyone can claim that Zary or Coronato are those level of players. Even with LV Eichel and Stone we don't have that level either.

He was one of the worst goalies last year and GMs will be quick to remind Conroy of this fact. Markstrom also makes 6 million and few teams could take this on.
It's hard from not only a value perspective but also cap perspective. If Markstrom would have had a better season last year I would have been more inclined to see it as being a possibility but right now, if I was a GM, I would steer clear from Marky.

Coronato is only 20 and he has shown the ability to score in this league. Zary is a PPG player in his first 4 games, a very similar start to Monahan offensively, while making little plays defensively. At this point, what more do you want from Zary? Just for comparison McDavid had 1G, 1P in his first 4 games in the league and was a -5.
Does Zary look like a franchise player yet? No. However, it took time for things to click for McKinnon as well. I remember when this board was having discussions about Monahan being better than McKinnon in their first couple of years in the league.

Is there a team out there that can badly use a goalie and Lindholm? Or even a Markstrom + Lindholm + Tanev combo? If they resign Lindholm and treat Tanev as a rental - that would be a top package for the Flames (even if we retained on Lindholm AND Tanev).

If Kadri keeps play like last 4 games he may have some trade value. Retain 1-2 million from his salary trade him for shorter salary dump plus prospect or draft pick.

Nemec has been a bit of slider. A recent redraft I saw he went middle of the first round. He’s gonna take a while to bake in the minors. NJ is on a bit of an accelerated program now, and if they want a D now they might give up one for the future. They need D - they have Hamilton and a bunch of mid guys.

Zary was a 24th overall pick, good not great, has ok not great stats in the AHL over 2 full seasons. Are you really going to say that his first 4 games trump all that? Use 4 game sample size to judge the player over years of watching what he has done prior? That is insane.
McDavid was 18 in his first 4 games and then went on to finish with 48 points in 45 games, do you really think Zary is going to finish this year over a PPG?
We can say he has had a great start while also acknowledging that he is unlikely to be a top level forward in the league.
When MacKinnon was Zary's age he was putting up similar numbers in the NHL that Zary put up in the AHL after dominating Junior.
And when has Coronato shown he can score in the league? 1 goal in 11 games?
I am not saying they are bad players or prospects but to think that they are going to be players that lead your team to a Cup is crazy. They aren't at the level of the players mentioned and there is nothing wrong with that.

Would Nylander resign here at 8x10MM?
Lindholm + Tanev + Zadorov (all 50% retained) + Markstrom + Huberdeau (1MM retained) for Tavares + Nylander + Samsonov + 2028 1st.
Tre takes a shot at 9.5MM Huberdeau thinking that he gets his game back in the Eastern Conference.

Tavares isn't waiving his NMC so the deal is done right away. Nevermind there is no chance teams are making a deal that big or whether it even makes sense for either team.

Oh very much disagree.
Markstrom has 2 years left, at a non-prohibitive $6M.
He has demonstrated he isn’t permanently damaged from last year, and GMs know the team in front of him isn’t good.
If he goes on the market, there will be multiple teams interested in hos services, with or without retention.
And NJD should be at the top of the list - Markstrom kicks their window wide open.
