The timing actually is pretty good for the Flames. If they trade him now, he could go to a bad team trying to get on track or to a playoff team. If they had to wait until the deadline, they are only trading him to Stanley Cup contenders. It’s a much wider market that could drive up the trade value.
I love Big Z but I don’t think he’s going to turn around a bad team’s fortunes. Getting a second round pick + from a bad team is a lot better than from a playoff team.

The Leafs really are the best landing spot for him. I'm just not sure that's where we get the best return.

I think almost all the contending teams can use him as he is mobile enough to conform to any of the systems. Leafs could, Boston could, New Jersey could. Literally every team. Should make for a good bidding war. This will really showcase Conroys negotiation capability as he can’t lose. He has to squeeze other teams here.

The Greasers are ripe for the picking, a 1st and a 2nd round pick and Flames retain 1/2 cap

Zadorov endeared himself to the gmfanbase for sure and it suck to see a "Call it as he sees it" kind of guy want out. I'd have preferred him to stay since he was one of the few who actually wanted to be here but for some reason we don't know, the organization doesn't seem keen on keeping him either so I ask, what don't we know?
Either way, if he wants out because he doesn't feel like they want him, it's okay, kick this tear down off now. I'm all for it. But don't kust stop with Z, anyone who's got half their foot out the door can go too.

Last time Conroy was pressured to make a trade, he didn’t do very well
Hopefully better this time. Hold on to him till the TDL if all you get is a middling pick
Zadorov can be very useful in certain situations on certain teams
If he is your bottom 6, you can compete except if you are the Flames because your top pairing dmen suck

Love Zadorov as a #4/5, but he likely wants a 4-6 year deal and to get paid like a top four guy.
Wherever signs him is going to regret it.
If the flames can get a good assets for him they should. The main issue is that moving Zadorov makes the flames very soft.

The Flames have too many defenseman who have mental blackouts on the ice and just lose their positioning so make boneheaded giveaways. Zadarov is high on that list. He's also big and makes big hits so teams will over pay for him.
I am fine trading him.

Toffoli and Zadorov are not top talent so they don’t have as many choices
The problem is top talent or not retirement contract is never a good thing
Look at Huberdeau and Kadri

As for Markstrom, I think his confidence is shot and he's done. Insiders really think he's still elite which is a headscratcher but works in our favour for getting value back. I'd push for Edmonton to get him considering his NMC and Edmonton's closeness could help to him waiving, not to mention if it ultimately doesn't work out there the Edmonton pick could be valuable. No way I touch Campbell's contract, but I imagine Campbell could be a good guy to mentor Wolf, as he isn't selfish. Would be nice to get out of Markstrom's contract, even if it means taking on another bad one (only if a lesser term, bad one).

The Flames need to flip as many assets as they can for some youth and picks…. But man, this still hurts. He slingshotted up my fandom list when he was vocal about wanting to be here when it felt like the entire league wanted out. Then he takes a huge step and voices his opinions on Russia invading Ukraine… damn. Liked this guy on the team so much. Brutal for it to be an outright request.

They always seem to snub Z for some reason while falling all over themselves lavishing guys who have openly said they don’t want to be here.
At some point I’d tell the Flames to go F themselves as well.

I get that people yearn for players who "want to be here", but heck, when Huberdeau signed he was also vocal about "wanting to be here" for a team that traded for him and wanted him. A year later, many fans outright seem to hate the guy. So in the end, "wanting to be here" is nice and all, but those things can change really quickly.
I love Z. He plays the game the right way and he's just a really likeable guy overall. He's a really solid #4 guy (IMO) and he's really good value on his current contract. But he's also a guy in his late 20s who is obviously trying to finesse his play into a big payday. And rightfully so, he deserves it. But I honestly wouldn't be comfortable signing him to a, say, 5 year deal at $5m upwards. So I really see this trade request as a blessing in disguise. This is an opportunity for the Flames to sell high and acquire picks and/or prospects for him, and in the long run, that's the correct play for the Flames. So I'm glad he's kind of forcing the Front Office to act, and like I said, I wouldn't be mad at all if Lindholm and Hanifin did the same. I don't trust the Flames to make the right call themselves, so the Flames tying their hands is not a bad thing. Sell, sell, sell ... and give opportunities to the Wranglers players who have earned it. Zary and Pospisil are already proving them right, and there are others who'd deserve a shot as well.

I don't think it needs to be a sexy return.
If it's a 2nd? Awesome.
If it's two 3rd round picks? Awesome.
...someone gets drunk and offers a 1st? Well, that's just madness. I wouldn't expect this type of return.
Moving Z and acquiring a top 64 pick, or two top 96 picks? That's not a sexy trade, but it's bullets in the chamber/extra lottery tickets. Those are important in building organizational depth/a real youth movement.

The trouble, as with Hanifin and Lindholm, is there may not be a market.
Maybe at the deadline?

Not sure why you move him for two thirds. Might as well wait if that is going to be the return.

Those picks have value.
Why do the Flames keep him at this stage? They're the 3rd worst team in the league, and this is a player who just publicly announced he no longer wants to be here.
