Definitely a schadenfreude addict here. I don't even watch hockey anymore and I can't go more than an hour without checking this thread the last few weeks.

It is totally fine to "be honest" about the Flames in virtually every other of the hundreds of threads on this board, but—and, I get tired of having to point this out season after season—THIS GROUND IS SACROSANCT.
Of course it is. It's a little internet shrine to hateful, malicious glee at the expense of Edmonton's hockey team, management, fan base, and on occasion, city. A holy and pure venue for enjoying the suffering of others, which is a predilection that no one should be ashamed of or shy away from in this thread, because it is - as you said - a safe place.

... Well, not for the Oilers, obviously.

Broad, sweeping generalizations about fanbases are fun! Especially in the E=NG thread.

I don't think you even understand what that meme means, especially given the attempted explanation above. Please point out the Flames fans celebrating or overhyping the Flames team this year.

Also, every fan base is laughing at the Oilers right now, but sure come to the E=NG to make a broad, negative generalization about Calgary's fans. Makes sense to me.

New Athletic power ranking. https://theathletic.com/5050849/2023...for-each-team/

32. The Kansas City Chiefs on skates
33. The Denver Nuggets also on skates
34. The Texas Rangers, you guessed it, on skates

84. Anytime the Power Rankings are Taylor Swift themed
85. People who complain about the Power Rankings being Taylor Swift-themed
86. People who think these should be the Power Standings and are mad the Oilers are ranked somewhere below 32nd because there are only 32 teams and realistically they should never be ranked below an actual shark, let alone the mere concept of PDO — neither of which can play hockey
87. Canucks fans who don’t understand the mere concept of PDO and think this time it’ll be different

112. Edmonton Oilers, 2-8-1

Ah, I see - you've misunderstood my intent. I don't think Flames fans or anyone are saying the Flames have accomplished anything or are good. I think the fans just don't care that the team is struggling right now and are instead celebrating ecstatically because this is just far too much fun.

It's just SO MUCH FUN.

It really feels like the Oilers can't let this fester much longer. I don't think a coaching change is the solution, but they can't miss the playoffs again when their window will firmly close at the end of next season.

They have two more chances to try and win, and they can't let one of them be lost in early November.

I think they have to trade for a goaltender. I think they will.

I hope they panic.

Draisaitl, Holloway, a first and Campbell for Saros and McDonagh... who says no?

I mean probably McDonagh.

I don't get the posts about the Flames being just above the Oilers. The Flames weren't being picked as Stanley Cup contenders with generational talents on the roster. I mean that team has been held up by a historic powerplay for years. It has cooled off and they can't outscore their problems so far.

Some Flames fans were optimistic that the Flames would be better this year; some weren't. Pretty much everyone around the Flames were on a wait and see mode and most were team rebuild after the first 10 games. I would say that almost everyone is still waiting to see what the Flames are as a team or what moves they will do for the long term. Zero people are looking at the Flames as a team that is going to do damage right now.

If you can't enjoy the absolute downfall of the Oilers, then you are not having fun as a Flames fan.

bit surprised Woodcroft hasn't been fired yet. Not that I think that coaching is their only/biggest issue, but going 2-9-1 with two MVPs is, well, no good.

This is not accurate.

First, Flames fans are acutely aware of the limitations of their team.

And second, they don't derive pleasure from the failure of the Oilers in some vain attempt to appease their own frustrations, Flames fans enjoy the failures of Edmonton and the Oilers because that organization, their media, and their fans, are the most arrogant, shameless, and entitled group in sports. They DESERVE to have everyone laughing at them. That is why fans from across the league were participating last night, not just Flames fans - because everyone sees it, Flames fans are just the most acutely aware of it.

Well, some people got it, not really my problem if you're not among them. Also I stole it from Reddit.

Anyway, your irritation about a meme is distracting you from the rich bounty of misery you could be enjoying right now in the form of delicious, delicious Oiler fan tears.

You guys sure love making up bad interpretations of a meme that is spot on.

Hating the Oilers and enjoying/celebrating their demise, regardless of where we are in the standings, is part of being a Flames fan. Why are we pretending that isn’t true and is just because the Oilers “deserve” it more than any other team?

You know who thinks they deserve it most? Flames fans.

Exactly. Every other fan base is enjoying this but NO ONE can enjoy it more than Flames fans. Even VGK and VAN fans who are reveling in arguing over which one of them "broke the Oilers" don't get to enjoy it as much. Montreal fans believe that if they cheer for the Habs their birthright is to be the custodians of hockey history and hockey royalty... well, if you wear the flaming C, THIS is your birthright. You get to revel in this, uniquely among all other fans. It's not the Stanley Cup, obviously, but it's as good as it gets in November.

No, it is you that doesn't get it.

That meme is mocking Flames fans for celebrating that their team is one rung higher than the lowly Oilers (but still ####ty).

However, Flames fans are not doing that at all - they know the Flames are also bad, but they are laughing at the Oilers because, unlike Flames fans, Oilers fans and media are delusional and arrogant, and bring this upon themselves.
