Why are you thinking he’d be a rental? Friedman even speculates that an extension is better for Hanifin and the Flames in a trade.

Yikes, Barrett Hayton only has 1 point in 12 games. He looked like he was starting to turn a corner last year....
Hayton is a notoriously slow starter. Didn't score a goal until game 29 last year, so this is actually an improvement.

Oh wow. I knew he started slowly last year, but I had no idea....

True. I just think asking for Boqvist instead of Bean might be too much. You’re correct that I’ve made the trade slightly in the blue jackets favour because of the risk they take in trading one of their top young centres and a first round pick that could realistically end up as a top ten pick this year. If Hanifin walks to free agency, Vladar fizzles out, Lindholm never regains his form with Gaudreau, and the blue jackets do not turn into a playoff team… a top ten pick and a 21 year old offensive centre becomes a lop-sided trade for the flames.

Obviously the flames take a risk too… Johnson could never reach his potential. The pick could be 20th overall with a low percentage chance of being an impact player in the NHL.

Cap-controlled assets have high value in today’s NHL. Even though Johnson’s development may be taking a step back, he’s still very valuable IMO. Lindholm’s best years are likely behind him and he could cost more or as much as Johnson in two years while being 11 years older.

Not to mention the cap relief the flames get… which is at a premium now in the NHL.

I think that the smart moves you see with teams trading vets is picking trade partners that think they are better than they really are and trading for their under-protected first round picks. In trades like that, the most valuable return has been that first round pick. That’s how Ottawa got Stutzle and that’s how Colorado got Byram. It’s tricky knowing what teams are over-predicting their future success but I think teams like Columbus and Phoenix are perfect teams to target in trades for Hanifin and/or Lindholm.

It’s certainly better for the flames. As for hanifin he probably would only sign an extension with one or 2 teams at this stage. Same goes for lindholm. The closer it gets to the trade deadline the more likely they become rental players.

Guenther for Hanifin seems way too optimistic to me. That's the exact type of trade I'd want though.

If Guenther were to become an good Flames, it would bug Canuck fans because he was drafted with their pick, and it would bug Oiler fans because he's from Edmonton.

I think the Flames would probably have to add.

I am not sure what the Flames would have to add. If Coronato was on another team would the Flames have to add in a Hanifin for Coronato trade?

I would say yes.
But it wouldn't be anything crazy. Still doable.

We’ve seen that GMs are loathe to trade prospects they’ve drafted. However, if there are players that were drafted by the previous regime, those seem to be more attainable.

So can’t see Arizona trading Armstrong picks. But ones made by Chayka are probably available. So Hayton and Soderstrom might be good targets.

I wonder a little about Guenther ... I think AZ might value Geekie higher than him. Guenther is down in the A and playing well, but the Coyotes already have a lot of wingers. Could see them thinking he's expendable. But I'm not sure if Hanifin would be the right play in that scenario.
Have to give to get. Geekie would be an excellent pick up, especially since the Yotes already have Cooley doing a good chunk of the work as 1C. They also have Hayton (who needs to get going) and Schmaltz who can play both C or RW.

Guenther wouldn't be bad either but Geekie is more of a need.

Weegar > Hanifin and it's not even close. Also don't think Hanifin signs a 6.25 x 7 with any team, so Weegar's contract > Hanifin's future contract.

Hanifin is a good fit for the Yotes, they have the assets. Could also argue Lindholm is a good fit for them too and take the 1C position while Cooley maintains top 6 C role. But I don't see them going for both as rentals, they likely want an agreement on an extension for either one set first.

I don't agree at all that it's not close. Hanifin's is three years younger and hasn't likely peaked. I feel most teams would take Hanifin over Weegar without needing much consideration.

If they have a strong defensive-first defenseman, sure. Tanev does a lot more than people think, to allow Hanifin to really bring out his offensive game.

I bet Hanifin brings back more in a trade just due to his age than Lindholm.

I could see it being straight up picks for hanifin from the yotes.. 1st + x2 2nds.

I also wouldn't be supprised if this org still tries to make a hockey deal to stay competitive and tries to get crouse + 2nd. Not sure the coyotes would go for it if they're trying to be competitive.

"But, as the Flames peruse the trade market (and they’ve begun seeing what’s out there), they will target individuals who they believe are a fit with Huberdeau."
Wouldn’t surprise me to see the Flames move Hanifin to the Coyotes for picks, and then use those picks to acquire someone to play with Huberdeau.

I really don't believe any team other than Calgary will give Hanifin full term.

He'll get term. At his age, and his performance - he'll get term. I think the "Calgary premium" would have probably been the $. Rumours seemed to suggest something north of $7.5M in Calgary, and I'd bet on an 8 year deal he'll land closer to $7M elsewhere (unless it's also a less desirable market)

I'm not the biggest Hanifin, but I think at times we undervalue him a decent degree. He won't return what Chychrun did at this point, but I imagine we're still looking at a good prospect + 2nd, or a 1st + lesser prospect. I'd be happy with either of those returns.

There is a reason why a team would give a larger contract to Hanifin than Weegar.
