Yup. Between people who forgot how to drive over COVID and lots of newcomers, driving standards have taken a plunge. Never mind the horrible condition that a lot of roads are now in due to lack of maintenance.

And in neighbouring Chestermere, a stranger than fiction situation continues toward a spectacular ending:
"Alberta government planning to fire Chestermere council, administrators after months of defiance"

Wait, I thought it was only 15 minutes to downtown from Airdrie. Are you telling me traffic has pushed that up to 20!?

It went up to 20, but has dropped down to 17 now thanks to that new overpass that just opened there.

Yeah, if we had Farkas vs Gondek round 2 today, my vote would switch.

I have to admit I've been on the cynical this is the "Farkas redemption tour" take like many others. What is wild is his relationship with Naheed and their discussions and openness since their time on council. I think even I would be leaning towards giving him the benefit of the doubt now.

Yeah, him losing that election might be the best thing that happened to him. Seems to have been a wake up call

For me it's also a general dissatisfaction with Gondek, who I don't think has been an especially successful mayor.
My first choice would be Nenshi coming out of retirement though, but I think that's even less likely than Farkas running for mayor again. I suspect both Farkas and Nenshi will run at higher levels of government eventually.

Plus if he could bring his conservative folks along and chart a more central course I think the city as a whole could benefit greatly. Help ease the ever widening division out there maybe, if we're lucky.

100%
He wasn’t the right choice last time, and I think if he had won he wouldn’t have learned anything. But losing and doing something meaningful beyond politics are both things that make better politicians, and I can appreciate the direction he’s headed.

And I was glad/surprised to see him not only change his rhetoric, but I really figured he'd just jump into a safe UCP seat last spring

Money is fungible. The money they used for the event centre and the money they're increasing taxes for priorities they think are more popular are both denominated in Canadian dollars and can be spent interchangeably.

It’s easy to forget - maybe because he always wore suits and talked about angry-old-people stuff - but Farkas was only 35 during the election.

Listened to the podcast yesterday. I've been skeptical of the redemption tour as well, but he really came across as human which is refreshing as that isn't a word I would have used to describe him 2 years ago.
I don't entirely buy that the charity work and hike weren't part of a redemption plan. Obviously there are more effective ways, but even if it was something he did for personal reasons, I'm sure the thought of redemption came to mind. It can be both and honestly I don't hold that against him -- hazard of the job.
The one thing I remain skeptical on however is his ability to empathize with people who are not like him. His discussion of the parental leave vote and how he had grown to recognize how self-centered he had been was eye-opening. One of the more dramatic stands he has taken is on LGBTQS+ issues, but it's also something that's personal for him as a member of the community. I want to see his empathy when the issue isn't personal for him, but for others he represents.
