Yeah but Treliving's always moved picks over top prospects.
Top prospects extend their window... picks are a lottery ticket.
His MO has always been to swap out top prospects for picks in trade talks.

They would be able to pickup a much more reliable veteran than Brodie at the deadline for significantly less salary than Brodie.

You might be able to get a guy like Nick Robertson who is talented, but often injured, and is being passed in the org by other prospects.
Hanifin for Robertson+1st+cap dump.

Treliving was known to refuse any top prospects in any trades during his time with the Flames. Notable exception is Fox, but he didn't want to sign here.
|
Outside of this year Treliving did not draft any of those prospects so perhaps he is not as attached. He also knows exactly what he is getting in players he acquired from the Flames so more comfort there.

I was wondering if Robertson was a target and also if he is any good or just has a really good brother?
1st+Robertson+Klinberg/Brodie would work for me for Hanifin. The Flames could potentially flip Klingberg/Brodie again before the deadline if the deal happened relatively soon

Robertson is highly overrated, highly doubt he sticks with an NHL roster. Unless the trade happens soon where that cap dump could be turned into another asset at the deadline then that isn’t a great return.

he's nowhere as good as his brother. His challenge is that he's smaller and not a great skater. And he doesn't have the hockey sense that his brother has that allows him to make up for those weaknesses.
But i would take him as part of a bigger package, as in the right environment and opportunity, there could be something there.
at times he's looked good.

Klingberg has no value at the deadline, at least there is the possibility that the Flames could get something for Brodie.
If Hampus Lindholm is the comparable to what the Flames could get for Hanifin that package is a lot less than what the Ducks got for Lindholm.
They got a former 1st round pick dman in his D+5 year, a 1st and two seconds.
Flames would be getting a former 2nd round pick in his D+5 year and a 1st.

This is a good point. That has always been his style. How about this:
To Toronto:
Hanifin
To Calgary:
2024 1st round pick (lottery protected)
2024 2nd round pick
2025 2nd/3rd round pick (conditional on playoff success and games played by Hanifin)

Brad does not lottery protect his picks in trades for dmen.

Toronto has 1st round picks in 2024 and 2026, other than those two they have no picks in the top 2 rounds for the next 3 years.

Niemela is a really interesting prospect.
Would like to see him in any return with the leafs.
His value would probably be equal to a 2nd.

Just my opinion, but I think Nick Robertson falls into the "overrated" category- though it may be a bit too early to say that definitively, as he's barely 22. He reminds me a bit of Matthew Phillips.
I think we have enough smurfs on the team, and it would be a MAJOR coup if we could pry Matt Knies away from them- he's going to be a star power-forward. Fraser Minten would also be amazing.

Anybody else think the Caps are going to chase Lindholm if Backstrom is really done for good? I imagine he will got on ltir until his deal runs out next year but he sounds like he is pondering injury retirement and that is a team that is all in with their window dwindling. if Backstrom is done they can probably lock up lindholm given how big Backstroms cap hit was.
They actually have a decent prospect in Leonard to build a package for a star around as well. Something arpund Leonard and a young center like protas if the flames are really going to rebuild would really give the rebuild a huge jump start

He seems to be a good prospect but, he's still just a prospect and I'd be surprised if he plays for the caps. With ovechkins age and their whole core having about 2-4 years left together won't be keeping their powder dry... never mind that their owner is super aggressive but ovechkin aint going to sit through a retool at his age. And I also think that trading an 8th overall pick for a 1st line center is a bit low value wise but accept rhat today everyone falls all over themselves for prospects who might not even be good nhlers.

I think Ovechkin definitely would sit through a re-tool. He got a Cup, and he's fixated on the scoring record now. He's likely quite happy with the arrangement of being a Cap til retirement and having the team do everything to get him goals.
Focusing on getting him goals could actually go hand in hand quite nicely with tanking/rebuilding.

Yeah, that pick is gone as a result of trading a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for 24 games of O'Reilly. Ouch.
