Yeah the contract Gaudreau turned down in Calgary is what Huberdeau signed

He committed more to Calgary than the big ###### and the turd sandwich did

Cool.

Apparently they don't like it there and preferred Calgary.

Guys even if he wanted back what would be the point? at this point you are looking at either a tear down rebuild or tinkering with what you have to make the current team work, the last thing a team in the Flames position should do is try to wholly rebuild the team on the fly with older expensive players that are struggling where they are, whether they used to play for the Flames or not, that way lies decades of irrelevance in cap hell

They love it there and they don't prefer Calgary.

That is why he went to Columbus he told us he did his research on them as well.

1 for 1 YES.

Have to add something significant... also yes.

Those extra years @ 10.5M will be a lot of cap used up for a very very very old useless player.

And most of those guys listed had 2 year deals at relative cheap rates compared to that boat anchor that is Johnny Gaudreau with 5 more years at almost 50 million left.

Sure, at the time of the signing.

As another poster commented there is a rumor that they've soured on Columbus recently and miss being in yyc.

So unless you're Gaudreau's neighbor or confidant and know something we don't, we'll carry on with the discussion.

I would find it very hard to believe someone is missing Calgary when we just hit November and its going to be pitch black at 4:30 with snow covered roads.

A guy that didn't even buy a house here is all of a sudden longing for Calgary?

There's no snow on the roads! It's been beautiful here for the last week or so. Is Columbus that far south that they get Florida weather and 12 hours of sun in the winter? Don't think so...

Some people find perma-darkness and bitter cold "cozy"

Just go to the super mega weather thread and see for yourself how many freaks there are.

100% easy yes for me. First of all, the fact that Gaudreau's contract is 2 years shorter in length than Huberdeau is absolutely massive.

As for a straight up comparison standpoint in terms of analyzing their games, Gaudreau would be a much better fit here because his strengths would shore up a lot of this roster's weaknesses. The first one I can think of being zone exits and zone entries on the PP and 5 on 5. The majority of this roster is awful at gaining the zone and they routinely kill PP time because they can't cleanly enter the zone with possession. Having someone who's elite in this department would certainly help the team's efficiency and productivity on the rush and on the PP.

Game breaking ability is another area in which this team badly misses his presence. Gaudreau wasn't the fastest player on the ice, but his anticipation and quickness allowed him to get a step ahead of the opposition to all kind of breakaways, odd man rushes and etc. The current roster doesn't seem to have the same flare or penchant for breakaways. Does the team even have a breakaway goal yet this season?

Net penalty differential, in other words, how many penalties drawn vs how many penalties taken. Gaudreau was a penalty drawing machine, in fact, statistically, he was #1 in the entire NHL with 167 from the time he entered the league to the time he left the Flames. It wasn't really close among Flames ranks with Tkachuk at 56 and Monahan at 24, really, only McDavid was close. So, Gaudreau certainly gave his team ample time on the PP while being disciplined himself. A team struggling to score could definitely use as many man advtantage opportunities as possible.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention Overtime. Don't have the stats off the top of my head, but this team looked a lot better with Gaudreau anchoring 3 on 3 overtime vs whatever the heck they've got going on right now.

I would not say it's impossible. I said from the start he won't spend that 8 years in Columbus.

Him and the agent wanted Philly and the agent miscalculated the steps to get Philly to bite in the year or so before JG became a UFA, so JG then took family considerations into account, with his wife having a child at the same critical time as his career decision.

I've heard enough from others far more knowledgeable about the situation than most, that he valued having a legacy with one team and that was his main driver for being here. If he came back sooner than later I think that stays intact. He liked the city, the organization treated him well, all that.

I really think his agent didn't help by telling him everything was going to work out, because if not Philly NJ would be an option...until it wasn't, and by that time his wife had different expectations, thanks to the assurances of the agent, of where they were going to live and raise the child for the first few years, and that clashed with JGs own intentions when the market for him collapsed, which is why the scrambling at the last minute and even thinking about changing mind the next day.

If you could do it today? One for one or even a small add on our part? 100% Columbus' plan, such as it was, got blown out of the water and thus it will take at least a year or two longer to get where they planned to be with Babcock.

Likely? Probably not. But IMO it would be great. He will be moved by Columbus in the next 2 years IMO.and Calgary would be on the list of potential destinations.

Let the little goblin live with his decision, and get traded to Philly for a pittance. Do not want.

I'm sure Johnny loved Calgary, but his family sure did not. They got what they wanted, apparently. Enjoy.

All this Huby is a good guy talk is true but irrelevant.
He's being paid to be a GREAT hockey player.
If we're supposed to just be happy with commitment to the city, I'd rather they sign Dino & save $10 million bucks.

But this trade is make believe fun and would never happen anyway.

Cap aside, maybe Gaudreau and Huberdeau would click together. I could see it. Could we trick Columbus into taking Mang and Dube or something?
