It basically confirms everything we have been seeing, pinpoints the moments where things break down, and shows the cause
Key point is that Huberdeau is good and the Flames play stupid hockey
It’s hilarious and painful to watch the other 2 forwards skate straight at the 2 D men.
Or entering the zone in lime with each other. We are coaching our U11s attack triangles on 3 on 2 zone entries, for goodness sake
We don’t play stupid hockey, we play playoff style hockey. Heck, even Bill Zito acknowledged that his team wasn’t playing a game conducive to playoff success, so he pretty much nuked his President’s Trophy winning coaching staff and traded away their history record breaking winger.
Those are pretty bold moves to make for a team that almost won 60 games. But it worked and they went all the way to the Stanley Cup finals beating some really good teams in the process. Personally, I think the Flames could’ve been the Florida Panthers of the west last year, we played well against the good teams last year, but we just didn’t get good enough performances from the goaltending and game breaking side to get us over the hump.

They also should have missed the playoffs and had the greatest statistical goalie performance in the history of the league. (ask noodles, not my numbers) The second the goaltending came back to earth they lost the finals by 20 goals or whatever.

Not providing support and options to the puck carrier is playoff hockey? Betcha if you looked at teams that were successful in the playoffs using the same analysis you wouldn't find teams to be playing Calgary Flames' style.
How many rounds have we won in the past ~5 years playing "playoff hockey"?
I truly believe he misses Calgary. He had rockstar fame while here. With its ups and downs, of course. But I bet he misses feeling important and relevant

Well, happy wife happy life right?
Gaudreau was better with the Flames and the Flames were better with Gaudreau (than Hoober-d'oh).

Stop putting Panthers hate into the universe lol. Say it with me. They are going to make the playoffs the next two years.
There are very few, if any teams, that try to generate offence the way the Flames try to generate offence. If that is on the one-dimensional player or on the Flames and their system can be debated. But the Flames with their straight lines, their focus on cycling down low, have a unique approach to generating offence in the NHL.
Everyone in the NHL plays this style to a certain degree. Obviously there are some very talented players in the game who can matrix the system with their elite skill, poise, skating and etc. But all teams check and all teams make going through the neutral zone difficult. So if you don’t have the talent to break team’s structures and create coverage problems , then you dump it in and you go get it.
The Backlund-Coleman-Mangiapane line are exceptional at this. It’s also the reason why their games don’t drop off in the playoffs whereas conversely, Huberdeau, the Gaudreau-Monahan duo and etc. Their games dropped off dramatically in the playoffs because they try to apply regular season hockey to the playoffs, which doesn’t work because the game changes in the postseason.

Did you even read the article and watch the videos because it's not talking about dump and chase or cycling down low.

…and why exactly do you think they should have missed the playoffs? Because you have a gripe against former Flames?
In an 82 game sample size, you either accumulate enough points to either make the playoffs or you don’t. So they made it and went to the Stanley Cup finals which is something everyone on this board including you would’ve taken, great goaltending included.

But they did make the playoffs. Who deserved to make it to the playoffs ahead of them? Pittsburgh, who lost to Chicago?
Based on that, I assume you believe Calgary deserved to make the playoffs, because they also got bumped by losing to Chicago.

Dude your takes on the Panthers are not very good. Give it a rest lol.

I don't think he cares. the media asked him some qs about Calgary before that Oct 20th game and I don't think he's a good enough actor to pull off being that indifferent.

Not sure if this has been posted already but this guy's take is accurate.
Just caught this video - and was going to post it as well. He seems fairly spot on! and shows clear examples of how our system doesn't compliment Huby's style of play and what made him successful.

The Flames do provide support for their puck carriers, they always talk about being connected and supporting each other up ice. How would they function as a hockey team at all if they didn’t offer support for one another.
Showing a bunch of random clips where they occasionally don’t offer support or options doesn’t mean that’s what they’re going for. After all, under the same systems and coaching, they put together the best line in hockey who regularly steamrolled teams in all areas of the ice.
Lastly, I don’t think the Flames started playing playoff style hockey up until they hired Darryl. People may hate the guy on a personal level, but his systems were top notch. He also taught the team accountability, discipline, structure and gave them an identity of a hard working team which are all beneficial attributes in the playoffs.

I think the difference is that Johnny & Chucky are more cycling/sustained offensive zone pressure type of players where Huby is more of a make plays off the rush type of player.
Calgary's dominant line suddenly struggled in games 2 thru 5 with the season on the line. Albeit, so did the Panthers vs Tampa. So it's not easy to just say one system is universally better than the other.

no because 92 points isn't a good season...its stupid to think they weren't at least extremely lucky. If the Flames got in with 93 they would have been lucky too...are you suggesting the Flames deserved playoffs.
I have a gripe against former Flames who bail on the team that drafted and developed them and destroy the franchise because the weather is bad and the fans and media are too much...Its actually shocking that so many cheer for him.
Dude your takes on the Panthers are not very good. Give it a rest lol.
I get your a fan but everything I say is true
they were a 92 point team...they got to the finals like Montreal did a couple years ago....and got pounded
You can pretend Zito is the smartest guy on the planet but it was a Pens win against the Hawks away from being a total disaster and you know it.
If they make the finals again I will take it all back...to me they are a mediocre team without a 1st for 3 seasons.
They were 17th overall, exactly the kind of record everyone around here complains about.
You guys always with the personal attacks because all the data supports me
they are average, all their numbers are average, they will have an average record again this season and probably next.

It shows both sides. It's partly systems, but partly that he just isn't good at somethings. Very skilled in some areas, but lacking in others. He's a highly specialized player. I think there are only few teams where he would put up his Florida type of numbers to be honest.

Who the eff cares whether Florida was any good last year? Jesus, enough already.
The point is that they didn’t seem to go very far under the system in which Huberdeau produced a ton of points. That is the point up for debate and seems like kind of an interesting topic.
