No harm, you can also buy a shirt with a built in neck guard that might be more comfortable. Alot of this comes down to changing the culture of hockey and destigmatizing the idea that more protection makes you less manly.

Yeah, when that first came out I was like "ouch" but I also thought it was super clever.

The shirt that Oshie and Wilson are wearing do not cover the majority of the Carotid or Jugular areas that would be the issue. I guess something is better than nothing. But neck guards will not solve this.

You can still get brain damage wearing a helmet. And yet…

Haha good point. I’m all for the idea of something is better than nothing. But that play is very bizarre that happened. Looks like a ninja kick to the throat lol.

Based on many of the comments here I figured this had to have happened in a scrum in the corner or something...not a full speed open ice incident.
There have been thousands of very deliberate actions in hockey of the years that could have lead to paralysis or worse, but thankfully those outcomes are rare. I don't think this incident fits that description...just a weird/unnatural movement, and even if the intent was to be 'dirty', it certainly wasn't as premeditated like so many others

He's just been arrested for manslaughter.

Wow. Having regrettably seen the video, it was maybe reckless by Petgrave but certainly not malicious.

I've been wearing one from a brand called Aegis. Got it on sale at sportchek. Comes with a foam insert that is supposed to provide impact protection but this additional pice is easily removable. Worn it for 3 games now and haven't had any issues. Feels just like the necks on those shirts that have them built in

that's probably why it's manslaughter and not murder charges.
for the UK:
Where an unlawful killing is done without an intention to kill or to cause grievous bodily harm, the suspect is to be charged with manslaughter not murder. Apart from the absence of the requisite intent, all other elements of the offence are the same as for murder. There are primarily two types of involuntary manslaughter, that caused by an unlawful or dangerous act and that caused by gross negligence.

The ‘play’ appeared an unnatural and reckless action. I don’t doubt the outcome wasn’t intended, but it did appear to be a manoeuvre to make some contact or to impede in a way that was not congruent with the rules and which was dangerous.

I figured something more would come out of this from a legal standpoint.
Not sure how anything would stick. But I have never seen anything like that in 50 years of playing and watching hockey.
I do think he intended to knee or kick him. I don’t think he obviously intended to kill him. But he did. I think there has to be some sort of an investigation. Whether it turns into anything or not.
