I hate to say it but I don’t see the situation improving for him in Calgary. Any chance he could become allergic to his equipment? If only it was that easy.

Put him with Zary and Coronato.
Youth energizes everyone - he isn’t getting excited to play with Lindholm or Mangiapane.
Let him be the big bro and show the future of the franchise how it’s done.

So the plan seems pretty obvious, let Huska lead us to a couple of top 3 picks, accumulate young skilled players over the next two years, replace Huska with an offensively inclined coach, probably Joel Quenneville who will be desperate to take the Flames job by then, and watch a Huberdeau renaissance for the final 6 years of his contract.
There's the plan Connie, you know what do do. Tank Tank Tank for the next two years.

The only reason in the past that the Flames generated any offence was because Gaudreau (mainly him IMO) refused to generate offence the way the coaches wanted him to. The Flames for years have spent time low in the zone on the cycle, Johnny was the only guy I can remember who stretched the zone.

I don't think Weegar forgot how to do that. But I can't even begin to count the times I've seen Huberdeau receive an outlet pass flatfooted and just end up on his ass.
Huberdeau not keeping his feet moving is probably the single biggest difference to his game since leaving the Panthers, IMO. We can blame his linemates all we want, but if they're frequently unable to enter the offensive zone because their best player missed his outlet pass and didn't have his feet moving and stood no chance of catching up to it... well, things just aren't going to go well transition-wise.
It is clear Sutter didn't think he had the talent to play a stretch pass, east--west style system. But I don't think Sutter has ever deployed such a system in the first place, so not sure what we were expecting? But I do think Weegar, Andersson, Hanafin, etc. ar emore than capable of making those stretch passes if Huberdeau is actually able to receive them.
Even last night Gilbert made a perfect pass to Huberdeau and he just ended up on his ass and it turned into a scoring chance for the Stars.
Good analysis, though, the comparisons between the Panthers and Flames are pretty stark.

I said this in the other thread as well.
We just don't play at the pace the Panthers did. They get the puck and go, and let everyone join the rush.
Huska can talk about the d having the green light all he wants but its just the same way Brent Sutter said they had the green light. Its red unless its a super safe play or a weak ass slapper into the goalies crest.
A passer needs outlets, when he has maybe 1 option most of his passes will be flubbed.

All I know is, right now, the guy I saw in Florida, is pretty much the same guy I’m seeing in Calgary. It’s why I was not a fan of the trade dating all the way back to when it happened. The difference is, a lot of his random spinning passes actually connected on the stick of his teammates often springing them on breakaways or finding them cutting hard to the net.
I’ve also mentioned in the past that his biggest strength is probably his ability to find the trailer jumping into the play. But like I said the other day, his line would be better off coming up as a 5 man unit, that way, the trailer actually becomes a viable option. But whatever line he’s on, is having a hard time accomplishing that because the opposition is closing in on him quickly forcing him to make rushed passes and this turnovers.
That’s why it’s up to him to either hold on to the puck a little longer, drop down lower along the halfwall and make a play to his centerman or to take a hit to make the play. There’s lots of options available as opposed to blindly throwing it into coverage and turning the puck over.
To me, Huberdeau is the opposite of a process guy. I don’t like his process and if I was a coach, he would leave me frustrated 80% of the time. But you deal with the frustrations because his vision and the unique plays he can make going against the flow of the play can lead to a plethora of goals. But without the production, what is he bringing to the table outside of frustrations?

I guess that makes sense as Florida had a decade to build around him. Unfortunately, we don't have the time, cap, or roster flexibility to cater to a player like that. He'll be 35 by the time that can happen.
I also agree that Huberdeau needs to move more. He just doesn't seem inclined to play that way.

I was at the game and after three turnovers in a row by Huby, I heard someone yell "you ####ing suck Huby. Get off the ####ing ice." And that was the last shift Huby played all game
It almost seemed like he was benched to protect his ego from frustrated fans that were starting to vent. But more likely, everyone in the dome could tell how much this guy sucked last night. It was a lot.

He played 20 minutes the most all season I would hardly call that a benching.
He wasn't out in extra man situations before as well.
It's not working for him right now. I was at the game. He is trying, I can promise you that much.
Seems like everyone wants to blame him for everything when this wasn't his choice.
Its very clear his confidence is still shot, and it doesn't help that the coach shuffles lines every game, and we don't play a very fast brand of hockey. It's not a fit, but it should be when you invest the money you did in him.

We were spoiled with how Johnny was so shifty and would create something out of nothing, whereas Huberdeau needs the rest of the team to position themselves to give him options. And on Huberdeau's side, gotta get those feet moving.
