Back in the day, the Flames signed Grossman to put themselves as close as possible to the cap before invoking LTIR. Once that was done, they didn't need him, so they waived him and he never played here again.

This time, the Flames gave Oesterle a roster spot to put themselves as close as possible to the cap before invoking LTIR. Now that's done, they don't need him, so they are waiving him and I don't expect to see him play here again.

Both times, various posters on CP lost their kyit about how bad the player was and how stupid the Flames' management is for signing him.

‘We want to give you a job for a month for bean-counting reasons and then dump you in the minors’ is not a sales pitch that will help you sign good players. If that's the job you're trying to fill, expect the winning applicant to be a crash test dummy on skates.

Once they signed Grossman he was immediately inserted into the lineup and got shredded vs the Oilers when they opened the new rink.

It was a terrible signing.

Oesterle may not be a terrible signing, but he sucks and should have been waived after the preseason. He was clearly beaten out by other guys but somehow he ended up starting the season on the opening night roster.

Grossmann was a PTO signing after training camp. Oesterle was signed July 2 in the thick of free agency.

Other than being 7/8th defensemen, I'm not sure the situations are comparable.
