The 2023-24 New York Islanders: Charting a new course
Your New York Islanders currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference 10 games into the season. We have a 5-2-3 record and a minus-two goal differential, and we've picked up points in four consecutive games.
We've made a couple trades to adjust our makeup in the early goings of the season:
To SJ:
Erik Karlsson
Marc-Andre Fleury
Tye Kartye
To NYI:
Nazem Kadri
Brett Pesce
Freddy Andersen
--
To CGY:
Jordan Eberle
Dennis Gilbert
Spencer Stastney
3rd
To NYI:
Ryan O'Reilly
--
As a result, our roster currently looks like this:
David Perron (74) - Ryan O'Reilly (76) - Nick Schmaltz (77)
Jeff Skinner (76) - Nazem Kadri (76) - Evgenii Dadonov (70)
Jack McBain (69) - Ryan Hartman (73) - Brock McGinn (69)
Cam Atkinson (68) - Nick Bjugstad (71) - Mikey Eyssimont (65)
MacKenzie Weegar (75) - Alex Pietrangelo (78)
Shayne Gostisbehere (74) - Brett Pesce (72)
Jacob Bryson (68) - Justin Schultz (70)
Freddy Andersen (82)
Jack Campbell (76)
We have largely resisted the urge to make any more changes to this group, despite having some exploratory discussions with a couple Western Conference teams.
Our goal is to keep winning. We're optimistic that this group can keep us competitive for a while beyond this year, particularly if top prospects Ryker Evans and Logan Stankoven can make the jump into the NHL at some point this season.
In the future, we'll be looking to erase our draft pick deficit and start operating in a more forward-thinking manner than we have in the past. I'm proud of the team I've assembled but I'm also intrigued to see what kind of group I can put together if I make 10+ draft picks a year.
For now, what we need to do is keep winning. If we can make the playoffs the next two seasons before starting to bottom out in 2025-26, I like what we can do from there.

Well scorp, honestly the team has taken its time to get here. It is always amazing to see you turn this team into a competitive roster. Your approach has always been unique and something I have taken a few things away from. Additionally, I have found sim success is a tough thing to find. Congrats on finding it early.

Biggest difference I see YoY is the strength of your blueline.

Yup, was priority No. 1 in the offseason. I wanted to get a bunch of different options so I'd have insurance if one didn't work out. Karlsson was a bust, but Pietrangelo has been fantastic.
