Senators forfeit 1st round pick (in 2024, 2025 or 2026) because of Dadonov trade
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/ottawa-senato...rade-1.2029600
“The Ottawa Senators will forfeit a first-round pick as a result of punishment stemming from their 2021 trade that sent Evgenii Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights and subsequent, invalidated trade that would have sent the forward to the Anaheim Ducks in March 2022.
"Ottawa will forfeit its first-round draft pick in one of the 2024, 2025 or 2026 Drafts," the league said in a release. "The determination as to which pick will be forfeited will be made by Ottawa within 24 hours of the conclusion of the Draft Lottery for that year. The League will have no further comment on the matter."

So Sens lose a first for missing info in some paperwork on a trade, and Chicago gets to keep their first and gets Bedard for covering up a sexual abuse scandal.
Makes sense.

This would make me absolutely livid as a Senators fan. It seems that there are different rules and different punishments depending on where on the map your favorite team is located.
This seems like unbelievably harsh punishment that wouldn't have been laid upon several other teams, but the NHL can use Ottawa to make an example.
Awful league.

That seems very excessive for the Sens. Press conference in a couple hours, should be interesting.

It’s decisions like this that make me happy I pirate the games and will never give another cent to the NHL

The NHL is turning into a bit of a banana republic.
There is no rhyme or reason for any of their decision-making.

Am I to believe the league would have done the same thing if it was Vegas or New York who messed up?
Absolutely bush league. I'd be livid.

It was Vegas who got burned so that's maybe a factor.

Rumour is that Dorion is going to be out. Press conference is scheduled for this afternoon. Also there is talk of Chiarelli as the replacement... comical if true

I thought so as well. If it wasn't one of Gary's little darlings on the receiving end it might have played out differently.

So they can wait until the 2025 draft lottery to declare which one it would be? If I were them and I made the playoffs this year, I'd get it over with now.

July 2021 - NHL says nothing after the first trade of Dadonov
March 2022 - All reports are that Ottawa has been cleared of any discipline after the next trade is voided
September 2023 - New Senators ownership group
October 2023 (18 months later) - Haha just kidding you have to give up a first round pick
Someone in the new ownership group pissed off someone in the NHL.

Which is hilarious, since their division rivals will benefit from Ottawa not having a pick and getting bumped up.

That’s the craziest spin on the wheel of justice to date. The player wasn’t negatively impact by this at all, and the league caught them as it was going down. So they are punished because their new golden child (who didn’t do their own homework) got bad press for a minute? This is insane.

League has it's favourites
The tinfoil hatters are the ones that don't see it at this point
We should feel bad for the Sens because we are on the same bottom tier as them when it comes to the league

...if the Sens actually let Dorion go and hire Chiarelli, I'm so sorry for Sens fans. I don't think there is a more potent poison pill than Chiarelli.

Don't forget, although I know it's amusing that really, the Canucks were the only team punished salary-cap wise for a contract that the league accepted, and then decided was illegal.

I was going to say, after a couple people were shouting down the idea of the Flames getting different treatment in the Andersson/McAvoy situation and calling homer, this example comes up and it’s pretty hard to argue that this is anything but fair.
NHL plays with kid gloves for some teams (original six and markets they have big financial interest in) and gives the gears to mid-market teams like the Flames and the Senators.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I seem to remember Lamoriello getting dinged for a draft pick in Jersey way back, only to have the League recind the penalty a year later just before the draft.
Edit: Whoops. My memory likes to blend things together and then add in a layer of cloudiness to really make sure I screw things up. It was Arizona...
Quote:
Me: was there an nhl team that had a draft pick taken away as a penalty, but then later on was given it back?
ChatGPT: Yes, the Arizona Coyotes had a draft pick reinstated as part of a revised sanction from the NHL. Originally, the Coyotes were penalized for violating the NHL's Combine Testing Policy during the 2019-2020 season by conducting physical tests on draft-eligible players outside of the NHL Combine. As a result, the NHL initially rescinded the Coyotes' first-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and their second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
However, the Coyotes' ownership and management changes, and their subsequent compliance efforts were taken into consideration by the NHL, which led to a modification of the penalty. The league reinstated the Coyotes' second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, citing these changes and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the team's ability to scout players as factors in the decision to lessen the punishment.
|
Edit: Wait! I was right the first time. (the Arizona situation didn't seem like something I would have cared about, nor was it long enough ago to feel like it was the same thing I was remembering...)
Quote:
Me: were the new jersey devils ever penalized by the league, but then the league later recinded the penalty?
ChatGPT: Yes, the New Jersey Devils were penalized by the NHL for circumventing the salary cap when they initially signed Ilya Kovalchuk to a 17-year, $102 million contract in 2010. The contract was rejected by the NHL, which ruled that it was structured to circumvent the league's salary cap. The Devils and Kovalchuk eventually agreed to a revised 15-year, $100 million contract that was approved by the league.
As a penalty for the initial contract, the Devils were fined $3 million, lost their third-round draft pick in 2011, and were required to forfeit a first-round draft pick in one of the next four seasons. In 2014, the NHL decided to reduce the penalty, allowing the Devils to keep the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 draft, acknowledging that the team had already been punished by the $3 million fine and the loss of the 2011 third-round pick.
The league's decision to reduce the penalty was partly influenced by changes in the Devils' ownership and the fact that Kovalchuk had retired from the NHL to play in Russia, thus the Devils were no longer gaining the intended cap advantage from the original contract.
