I miss the days when he was considered an excellent GM in these parts and there was a considerable contingent that wanted him around here David Poole style. I suspect that this team over the next 24 months and beyond will call vanquish any remaining BT fans.

Don't think it was Conroy TBH.
It was the same thing under Darryl as GM, then Feaster, Treliving, and then Conroy.
It's the owner that doesn't know when enough is enough and to just pull the plug on a formula that's not working.

Need a throat to choke, right? How long do we give Conroy?

And especially why was he seemingly willing to overpay heavily (+Weegar, 1st, prospect)? Zito could not WAIT to get rid of Huberdeau.
Now we can speculate why that is (over bloated career year, locker room clique, the strip club rumors etc) but generally in business if a deal is too good to be true, it's not. Instead Tre got a Trojan horse.

He was an unsigned UFA after the 23 season. So was Weegar.
No GM wants to get Gaudreaued.

Except Treliving
But Zito could've easily signed Huberdeau if he wanted. Instead he overpaid to get rid of him. That's a red flag or should've been. From the Panthers POV, I never personally wanted to sign Huberdeau to an eight year retirement contract but didn't think there were other options. You would've gotten pennies on the dollar in the trade market due to the cap situation. The Tkachuk situation was heaven-sent for Zito.

I wouldn't read too much necessarily into Zito willing to give up Huberdeau ad assume that's a terrible thing - he was an offensive wizard in Florida, but his defensive game was lacking. And Tkachuk was starting to get the reputation of the "unicorn" in analytics circles.
Florida was coming off a disappointing playoff, and I think Zito felt he needed to change up the chemistry and go for a different style. You have to give to get.
How many people thought it was a bad trade for Calgary? Hardly anyone. A lot of people thought adding Weegar meant Florida overpaid.

Value wise the trade was good, in vacuum. But it always implicitly included re-signing the players at least if you were Calgary (I'd argue for any other team too). So you have to include the age of the players and their upcoming cap hits. It made the deal risky. Signing 30 year olds to high end UFA deals meant the window was maybe 2-3 years if you include the Kadri signing. Obviously the whole things blew up immediately, Treliving probably never gave a thought whether the players were even a fit. It was classic armchair GMing for him.

Not me. Zadorov is a tire fire out on the ice. I really question his hockey IQ. I think he's a great guy and a great personality but I'd move him in a TDL deal if possible.

He's a bottom pairing defenceman on a good team, and while he's entertaining, yeah - I would not want to be on the hook for his 'retirement' contract.

Zadorov seems like a good guy to have around for a rebuild. Not good enough to change the outcome of games can play on the 2nd pairing while missing the play-offs, provides some toughness for the team and gives the fans some excitement with his hits and terrible pinches creating chances (unfortunately for the other team).
A 4 year term would be my preference as by then we would hopefully have some young guys we developed coming in to take over for him.

In a perfect world you trade him, he goes on a cup run, and then returns here in the offseason. Our defense really needs him, whether we admit it or not. He is one of the only guys that can lay a hit, and I would much rather pay him than some 4th line scrub forward to be the one that hits. Zadorov is a fine 4/5. When we're not contending, h'e's a middle pairing guy. If in the future we are a playoff team on a consistent basis, the goal would be to keep him on the bottom pairing.

He is also the type of guy a team may overpay for at the deadline. If they can get 2 2nds for him then that would be a huge win. Maybe he comes back in the offseason but I assume he will either chase the biggest money/term or a winning situation.

While this is probably true, I don't believe that Francis actually gets any inside information.
I don't find him anywhere near as insufferable as I used to. In fact, I kind of like him in his role on TV, he has grown into it.
But didn't he all but guarantee that Rasmus Andersson would be captain? I suppose that could have been before Backland decided to stay (which, oops, maybe he's regretting), but I'll take this with a grain of salt.
Personally, if they are going re-tool rather than rebuild, which I am sure ownership somehow still think is the way to go, then I think signing Hanifin is a must unless someone overpays.
Trade Lindholm if the return is decent, trade Kadri and/or Huberdeau if you can get anything at all and/or get out of their contracts.
Trade a goalie, whichever gives you a better return.
Trade Tanev, not because I don't like him, but because he is the type of defenseman that will cause a bidding war at the deadline and we'll get much more than he is worth in a trade.
You do this and hopefully ice enough pieces that like each other, rid the team of some of the toxicity and truly just aim to squeeze in if that is what ownership is intent on.

You trade Z and tell him there'll be an offer for him July 1. If he comes back, great. If not, good for him. Priority on getting an asset.

Especially since a team full of big blueliners just won the cup.
Everyone will be looking for size that can skate at the deadline. Big Z fits the shopping list perfectly.

Tanev as well. I think they will get a 3-4 2nd round picks between the two. Outside chance at 1st if some GM gets dumb

I hope Lindhom, Dube, Hanifin, Zadorov score. Let's pump up their value.

Was watching TSN this morning and they had Dreger on there putting his own spin on the whole thing, saying it's actually the Hanifin camp and Hanifin's agent that are pulling back from negotiations with the Flames because they want to see how the team does first and whether we can pull out from this tail spin to start the season. No mention of the Flames pulling back their offer.
Then they went on to say what we already know, which is that if Lindholm and Hanifin are made available at their ages and cap hits that the Flames should expect a very fair return. That's all I've heard since this Francis article came out yesterday, and then Pat on 960 discussing hypothetical trade destinations and returns for Hanifin (suggested something close to Hampus Lindholm value - 1st and two 2nd's) but probably a bet less than that.
