In advance of the decision, I’ll just say, considering Ras and that this is a phone hearing, the DOPS is ridiculous

It’s away from the puck, OEL just standing there and McAvoy skates through his chin with his shoulder. Dirty, in no way accidental. There is no contact with the body other than the head. It’s something that has no place in the game.

With Rasmus, there is a discussion of degrees on several elements. Laine was playing the puck. Ras came through and his head was low because he was shooting, but Ras did hit through the body. He left his feet, but was it partly from the physics of the impact? It was late in the game but it’s not illegal to play to the buzzer

Even if you find Ras on the wrong side of all of those, there is still a conversation about where there is space for benefit of the doubt

The McAvoy hit should be punished more severely than Andersson, hands down. There is really no grey area

Maybe it is the Flames tax at play. Just like when Tkachuk got a game for a little tap on the foot of a Red Wing (I think it was) stepping off the ice

How so, he is a repeat offender

Shouldn't a 2nd+ offence have a much stiffer penalty

And the puck was nowhere near the play. That alone should have meant more than Andersson. Not a hockey play, repeat offender. Not trying to do anything but injure an unsuspecting player.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think for repeat offenders it is only within a certain time frame, so if you go a few years with no offenses you get a clean slate.

It is stupid but that is why he isn't considered a repeat offender.

Raz had never been suspended for anything before. He got 4 games.

McAvoy has been suspended for a hit to the head before. He also got 4 games.

That means McAvoy DID get less games than Andersson did, as he would have had 1-2 tacked on as this was his second suspension for exactly the same thing. Meaning his base, "first-offence-equivalent" penalty was only 2-3 games.

Anderson was fined for elbowing previously, so even though he hadn't been suspended he was technically a repeat offender.
ETA: I am not 100% sure how the repeat offender designation is determined.

No man, trust me it's definitely you. The whole idea of a Flames tax and the NHL purposely being harsh on the Flames is conspiracy theory level kind of nuts.

You can also argue Andersson had more intent to injure because it was not a hockey play as the game was ending and the game decided. But I won't because why bother.

He is not a repeat offender according to the NHL rules, even with his previous suspension.

If he does it more than 18 months from now yes, assuming the rules haven't changed yes.

A repeat offender is one who has been suspended for a second offense within 18 months of the previous offense. Repeat offender status only applies to the way fines and salary forfeiture is calculated. All disciplinary history is considered when determining a player's suspension
