I'm not disputing he had a bad contract- but he had enough value that teams were still poking around to trade for him even with the bad contract.
Huberdeau does not engender the same interest.

Maybe he does if he somehow pulls another 115 point season out of his ass. Karlsson only started getting interest again because of his season last year

The only people saying "signings were close" and now "signings are on hold" are unreliable media. I don't know why anyone puts stock into any of this, it's totally baseless either way. You might as well pick up a copy of the Weekly World News at the grocery store checkout and keep up with the latest goings-on of "Bat Boy".

So maybe we should change our system to river hockey and let Huberdeau and Kadri score massive amounts of points (who cares about defence?) and then shop their contracts around. Worked for SJ right?
And it would be more exciting to watch as a viewer.

I don't think Friedman qualifies as unreliable media.

At this point I hope the team just loses 4 of the next 5.
Seal the fate for the year. Sell everything, take bad short contracts in return.
Draft top 3 this year, top 5 next year.

The Habs have the Flames' 2025 first.

I wouldn't call it "9 games in and fans are in full panic mode"
This team looked terrible last year too, if it wasn't for the hot start they would have easily missed the playoffs. Let's not forget just how poorly they finished, not to mention the record breaking "tie game points" they obtained.
This team needs to rebuild, but at the very least reset and I hope this is the start.

Their profiles on team 2 aren't even that comparable. The first season in SJ EK was almost PPG- 45 in 53, another injury really hampered him. Then Covid shortened he was OK but the sharks really collapsed as a squad around him. 20-21 was really bad, comparable to last season's Huby. But really it's injuries and COVID you can trace it to.
I don't see how you can compare these players. EK produces as much or more than Huberdeau as a defenseman. Yeah the contract was massive but teams were STILL bidding for it. Edmonton was trying hard to land him for example. There's no one in the league that is looking at huberdeau.
and for the last time, no one hates anyone. We don't know each other enough to hate eachother. Except for yoho, I know and hate him.
|
No one is saying they are identical players. But I think you overestimate Erik Karlsson as a player. And underestimate what a PPG season would do for Huberdeau's value.
I don't think SJ put offence through Karlsson to up his value. I think they did that because it's the only way he's useful. But the byproduct was, he upped his trade value.
BTW - Potentially the best goalscoring Dman of all time? His high is 25. Last year. Good for 45th place. He cracked 20 three times. Bobby Orr scored 46 goals one year, and was over 30 most years. Coffey had two 40+ goal seasons. Makar scored 28 in his 3rd season. And won a cup doing it.
Career wise, Karlsson is currently in 26th place. His total is in much fewer games than a bunch ahead of him but not all. In 109 more games will he score 44 more goals? I doubt it. If not, he doesn't even catch Weber.

It's not catering - it's playing to his strength. And IMO using him better does lead to more wins. Just on the powerplay alone.

They needed the owners permission to take on another 25+ million for the next four years, hardly out of pocket.

It doesn’t matter what you call it or how it is executed. Teams are usually given 20 games before the panic button gets pushed. But the Flames look so bad and getting worse each game that something has to start happening or they risk losing their fanbase.
This group was extremely frustrating to watch last year due to inconsistency and lack of the ability to win games where they outplayed the opposition. This season they look like they couldn’t care less about losing. After pinning last season on Sutter.
When it’s all said and done the one thing they better find is some proper leadership. I certainly don’t see a lot of it. I would prioritize that.

I think every single one of us should take this information as evidence of what we personally hope to see.
What I hope to see: An actual rebuild. 3 seasons long, then come back up. "Thank goodness for this organization finally seeing the light!"
What I don't want to see: Minor tweaks. "Damn you Murray Edwards! You have all our tax dollars in this new building, and you are force-feeding this embarrassing team who can't even be bothered to compete hard in the Heritage Classic?"
I will personally wait until the start of next season to really express how I feel. One way to re-state what Francis is passing on is: "Yes, we realize that we suck a tremendous amount. We are going to make big changes. Please be patient."
They will not announce a rebuild (if it is happening) 9 games into the season. Nobody does that. They won't announce squat even if they are able to move a player or two for futures until at least the trade deadline is on the horizon. We all know the market is extremely tight right now, and teams have to accrue cap space, or bigger injuries have to happen to make more LTIR room.
Nothing is going to happen overnight. We were sort of blessed that last time Calgary decided to rebuild since it was a short season. We didn't have to endure a boring, disjointed team for so long.
So, I am going to get myself to watch every game until the end of the season, and I am going to enjoy it tremendously, because I know this boring, difficult to cheer for team as we know it is coming to an end. How many pieces move out is anyone's guess - I have no clue how deep the changes will go, but I also don't know where the exact threshold is between "Rebuild" and "Retool". I am guessing this hoopla (and the very fact that the Flames are finding themselves in second last place right now!) means that even if it is a retool, it won't be 'change around the edges'.
The last rebuild was fine. This team needed to add more to the core, but instead Treliving added too much to the perimeter from the UFA market and through trades. Let this rebuild learn from that one - let it develop organically. It will show you when it is ready to start transitioning to being a competitive team and ready for those additions on the perimeter. The core - especially in a market like Calgary - has to be drafted IMO.

Good to hear. Granted I have a feeling some of the ufa players probably also said pump the breaks. Either way it’s the way to go . Now we wait to see what the return is on some players and really get a feel for what the organization is thinking going forward.
