You’ve missed the point.
CZ said it is going to be very difficult for the Flames to bounce back from the Kadri signing and the associated Monahan and 1st to Montreal trade. That could very well be true, but it’s no certainty as he seems to intimate (the Flames are doing it wrong, more often than not).
What I’m saying is that it’s far too easy to make these types of claims. The Flames can absolutely ‘bounce back’. Kadri and/or Huberdeau are only two players. Thinking the Flames are sunk for the next 8 years or whatever just because these two players aren’t living up to their contracts (at this specific point in team no less), is a pretty narrow view. There are many occurrences that could shift the perception and trajectory of this team at almost any point. Come this year’s trade deadline this team could be radically different.

I didn’t say Huberdeau was carried - I said he has nothing to work with, and he doesn’t.
Kadri was a reliable 40-50 point #2C his entire career, and he was his first two years in Colorado.
His third year, he got prime PP time and had a 87 point career year at age 31.
Anyone could see he was closer to the 40-50 point guy than the 80 point one.

And yes nobody expected that pace but he scored at a high clip not playing with their big guns. Again he wasn't carried by guys he outscored.
60 was a reasonable expectation, he was the Flames best forward the first half of last season and then it fell off the face of the earth

He was a 52 point pace player over a 10 year career in Toronto. You just don’t sign a player like that to a seven year deal at the age of 33.
It doesn’t matter how many times you bring up his one career season and call him a 100 point player.
Last year’s Kadri was right at his career pace. And at 34 now, he is getting worse not better.
edit: He is 33. No need to make it worse than it actually is.

Because he’s not a team’s best player. He’s someone you want coming over the boards after MacKinnon or McDavid takes a shift.
He can’t be your best centre.
And he’s now 33.
Relying on 33 year olds who’ve never been counted on to produce primary offense is how you draft top-10.

The Flames didn’t pay Kadri expecting more than a 60 point player. 87 point centers don’t sign for $7m AAV.
The actual production from Kadri last year was perfectly in line with his contract. The -19 and general lack of give a #### was not what the team thought it signed up for though.

I never said he was...top centers make 15M not 7
Fact is he is way better than he is playing now. Not sure what you guys are reading...nowhere am I saying he is a 100 point player every year.
He put in an incredible effort in Colorado that we are not seeing here... Colorado certainly missed him last year in the playoffs. Kadri was their best player in the Blues series, balls out every shift.

This is why I think the Flames should explore moving him. If his production is on par with his contract, shouldn't be too hard. IMO he doesn't want to be here.

Thing is when you sign an older player to such a long contract you’re trying to buy down the AAV through term.
I don’t know how he has any value after you use up the most productive years of his deal. Those defending him only want to reference his AAV and never the term.
But yeah if he plays better, it hopefully wouldn’t cost you as much to move him. Is there a comparable player out there with 6 years left on their deal that teams would want to part with?

If anyone expected different from Kadri they didn't watch him play.
He had the definition of a one-off season in Colorado that he was never going to replicate here or anywhere. The player we got last season is the player he has been his whole career. The fact at his age he didn't drop off is a benefit.
He is a guy that never is a key player, doesn't drive play, doesn't create offense, can't be relied on to produce at a consistent level. When he had top level talent ahead of him in TO and Colorado making much less it worked well, coming to Calgary where he doesn't have the level of elite players around him to do the heavy lifting offensively and he stands out.
This isn't a he is working out this is 100% a case of we got exactly what we should have expected with him.

Who is defending him? People are saying the contract was a reasonable UFA deal for what he SHOULD provide
Everyone knew the term was bad this isnt breaking news
You guys are wrong about his Colorado season though...he was great when their top guys were out and carried his line. Avs miss him. His Finals OT winner was an individual effort.

I guess MacKinnon is, technically, but in terms of AAV no one even has $13M yet.

Nate is making 16.5 this season, I said making
McDavid will be a 15M plus AAV when he is UFA
7M isn't a huge contract anymore

Why you talking about what a player will make in 3 years?
I dont see anyone comparing Mckinnon and Mcdavid to Kadri either.

Somebody did... literally Nate who is making 16.5 this season
Flames didn't pay him expecting another 100 points season. He needs to be a 50-60 point guy who plays his ass off. Hopefully he gets back to it

"Top Centers"
then you name the highest paid player in the league.
Anyways whatever, just seemed like a ridiculous amount when nobodies AAV is close to that high.

Well if we use Mackinnon as your benchmark then the price of a top C is going down.
Why should we care how the money is distributed?
