I'd love to hear what GMs would be able to turn this current team around with some of the contracts being carried. We're basically the Denver Broncos of the NHL right now.

It took BT 9 years to create this mess, let's give Conroy a little more time.

Have to give him time. BT (and/or ownership) left him a huge mess. It will take years to clean up.

It's probably not the right question...

The question could be formulated:

Can Conroy (or any GM) succeed under this ownership?
(not to even mention the aforementioned cards he's been dealt)

Conroy came out saying all the right things. Make room for younger players, do better at asset management, don't let ufa players walk for nothing. Find players that want to be here.

He did one thing out of all that he promised. He left room for younger players. He also traded the one Ufa player we had that unequivocally said he wanted to stay here for peanuts and that player is currently over a point per game on his new team while the Flames are starving for offense. He resigned one Ufa who isn't contributing, although is a notorious slow starter. Other than that he hasn't done anything to address the problems he himself identified. Yeah its early to judge his impact after a small sample size, but he's trending in a negative direction, you can't argue that.

this thread is beyond ridicoulous after 8 games, not sure what GM would succeed with this team he inherited. When the GAF meter is so low among these sensitive players that dont like the coach because he is mean, what can be done this quick.

Nothing to do with Conroy, but Toffolli sounded out right away when asked that he'd accept a trade and CC got it done right away.

There was some initial bluster from CC about wanting guys who wanted to be here.

But three other guys (11,28,55) who seemed the most upset at the coach last year, sat on the fence all offseason, unlike Toffolli, about committing, allowed to by the Flames, and none of them so far look rejuvenated. Was that a miscalculation?

Nah. Toffoli had a career season. Re-signing would have been a mistake. I figured he’d get points this year, looking at who he’d get as linemates. But long term it was time to cut ties. It has nothing to do with the other guys, all of whom except Backlund, might be moved. Hell maybe even he gets moved depending on how the year plays out.

Sorry, the miscalculation I mean is the three other guys.

Toffolli asked for a trade and CC pulled the trigger. We could probably have used some of Toffoli's 9 points right now, but I brought it up to illustrate that CC can get things done if given a clear answer as Toffoli gave him.

The other three maybe didn't give him a clear answer at the time, and he let them use the summer to figure it out, instead of pursuing trade opportunities on all of them a little more urgently, and that could come back and bite him.

Craig Conroy has to the nicest guy we've ever had play in Calgary. He's just a gem of a human being. I remember him calling into Overtime with Rob Kerr after the playoff games in 2004. He was as excited as anyone, and unlike most players, chose to stay in Calgary with his family after his playing career was over. How can you not love him?

I just don't think taking this job was smart. He's going to be the fall guy for the terrible team we have. He isn't a magician, and the best GM ever wouldn't be able to get us out of such a terrible situation cap-wise. There is NO path to success. Craig Conroy is going to go from being the friendly guy who takes pictures with people when he's at his kid's soccer games to getting abuse from a fanbase that is going to be frustrated with what looks like another eight years of misery.

Backlund is the only remaining Calgary Flame to have ever played with Jarome Iginla. He signed a team friendly deal and is captain. Zero issue with that.

Lindholm and Hanifin have so far done nothing that will tank their value at the deadline.

Markstrom is well on his way to rebuilding his value - he has two years left after this, and his contract is reasonable.

They won’t be anywhere close to a playoff position this time.

Toffoli was a support player, and they turned him into bigger faster younger player who will be here for at least two years and can always be traded for something else.

I just don’t get how this board can be so down for a rebuild, and then be outraged when this paper tiger of a roster doesn’t lead the division 10% through the year.

Guess what? This roster is drafting top-10. Probably top-5. Because they have no elite players and none coming soon (even if you like Honzek and Morin - they’re not going to be elite in the next two years).
