Super premature thread. How he handles this year will be interesting.

I hope Craig gets the green light to rebuild because it seems his strength is more on the amateur side. I will get nervous if Lindholm is given a ridiculous 8 year extension.

Anyone who thinks Conroy was going to fix anything, 8 games into his first season, was fooling themselves - it will take 2 years just to figure out all the problems. Then 5 more to fix them.

Conroy looks competent enough to be the guy to do it, to me.

People say they'll be patient through a rebuild.

And people start threads about a GM, 8 games into his tenure.

This team is actively saying they are not rebuilding.

This isn't a rebuild. They've not made one single move towards rebuilding.

There isn't a point in debating Conroy as he hasn't made a stamp on the team yet. If he starts signing old guys to long term deals I'll be super annoyed at him as he handcuffs himself in the future, but I think he'll be judged starting at the deadline, onwards.

Didn't say they did. Way to completely miss the point.

There was zero market during the summer, none of the contending teams had any cap space.

Won't judge Conny until it's actually possible to clean up the training mess. He has this season basically to aquire some draft picks and get out of cap jail. Here's hoping he sells Hanifin and Lindholm.

If he signs old guys to 8 year deals, its because that's what the owners want.

Conroy is likely not allowed to put his stamp on the team.

There is a reason he was picked.

They believe the team should be rebuilding. If they were rebuilding, there would be built in patience.

They aren't rebuilding. Conroy/the Flames said they were a good team. Hence the lack of patience.

I feel bad for Conny. He inherited a mess of a roster during a time when the trade market is dry and has a bunch of key contracts expiring. Expecting him to pull a miracle off and fix this mess in a few months is unrealistic. One thing I do really like about Conny is that he’s put emphasis on building through the draft being key and wanting to hold onto picks and giving prospects a chance over UFA’s and PTO’s

Yes, that seems reasonable - let's see how that plays out.

He hasn't had a chance to implement a vision yet. You can't judge him until he's developed and started to implement a plan based on what he's seeing now. So far, just like the rest of the organization, he's been hoping this team is more than what it is.

Until we hear anything that substantiates he's turned down a good offer for either of those players, it's a completely unsubstantiated critique.

We are no better off getting pennies on the dollar for Hanifin and Lindhlom than we are getting nothing for them. You aren't wrong, the injury risk is real, but its not something Conroy can control. He needs to wait until he gets an offer that actually helps the team for those players, not jump at anything so he can simply say he did something.

Unbelievable that anyone is willing to blame this mess on Conroy. This organization has 2 boat anchor contracts and he is not responsible for either of them.

I need to see more data before making up my mind about Conroy.

Here's what we have so far:
  1. Toff for Sharangovich + 3rd - Seems like a loss, but he had to get under the cap before the season started, and apparently he just kept receiving even worse offers.
  2. Backlund re-signing - Seems like a fair number, it could've been a premature signing with the direction this team is going.
  3. Greer - Great pickup.
  4. Oesterle/Hunt - Nothing special, league min player, can be sent down.
  5. Kylington - Out of his control.
  6. Phillips - TBD - I don't think that's a big loss for the Flames. He had a good game against us, but I don't think he's better than Dube/Pelletier/Ruzicka.
  7. Having no PTOs at camp seemed like a good move.
  8. Having spots open for young guys on the roster was a good decision.
  9. Hiring Huska - TBD - I don't think Huska is a bad coach, but he is a bit green so far.
  10. Wolf - He's actively looking to trade Vladar. Vladar isn't helping his case so far. Wolf will be called up for a game soon.
  11. 2023 draft headed by Honzek - TBD, the picks look decent so far.
