Blues 3 Flames 0
Blues 3 Flames 0
- Blues score two in the first and then completely shut down the Flames.
- Markstrom excellent in goal
- Lindholm and Kadri at 10% and 18% respectively in expected goal splits
- Coronato solid five on five with five shots
- Solovyov didn't look out of place at all

Thanks for the writeup as usual. I am just wondering if you have a way to run Huberdeau and Lindholm pairing stats. These players never visually pair to me. I'd like your comment on that.
I also think we have at least 1/4 our roster without solid full time NHL experience, a new coach. Oilers have different woe's but at least the bottom of the league isn't empty.

I didn't realize how much Andersson meant to this team but without him they look even more hopeless. It just makes his suspension look all that more foolish.

I think it shows his worth, but also shows that the team is ridiculously bad.

Sad times for sports fans in Alberta when Oilers, Flames, Hitmen, Oil Kings. Stamps, and Elks are all lousy and sitting at the bottom of their respective leagues! Tough to pay hard earned money to watch these teams with little to cheer for, and tired of hearing excuses all the time!

I don't really hear any excuses, I hear them owning up to it.
They didn't play badly in the Columbus and New York games. The Detroit game and this one were utter disasters. If this game happened after a good start, we'd be over it pretty fast.

You need your top players to perform
Markstrom is playing better
But Huberdeau is proving its no fluke he is now a 50pt guy
And Kadri is a negative player
How do you win with that? We are ####ed in the next 8 yrs unless we find a Connor Bedard to take over

Flames need to be 13 games over .500 the rest of the way to get 92 points and that isn't a playoff guarantee.
That's still under .600 but the start has certainly reduced their chances, and likely heightened their focus on that trade deadline.
Will be interesting to see if the Lindholm and Hanifin camps cool on resigning as well.
That's my focus ... the next 6 weeks. Not 8 years thanks!

Given Lindholm has no chemistry with anyone on the roster and the current plight of the team, I just don't see why he would want to sign on for this long term. If anything this start may remove some of the complexity around the free agents as what's the player's appetite to sign on for this long term and what's the team's appetite to keep this together when it's not working?

Logically they need to sell and rebuild since this is not working as a group
But what do I know

I'm hoping there is some truth to the CP rumour (rasta masta?) that they have a 20 game window to make a call on what they'll do with Lindholm etc.
We are at game 8 now and without a quick turnaround I doubt they are .500 at that point now.
If that's the case ... where they aren't going to let this limp into January without a decision made we may see some contracts taken off the table.

I wouldn't label it.
I think you just make good asset management decisions with an eye to the team's chances in any given year.
It is only 8 games. Trends are trends and I certainly see them too, but it's less than 1/10 of a season.

The Blues missed the post-season in 2018 and had a terrible 1/2 season in 2018-2019 and look how that turned out.
Maybe our management is looking at this team and hoping for a similar outcome.

This start is probably the 2nd best outcome. Obviously it would be better for the team to actually be good, but that being not the case, terrible is better than okay, because it at least brings clarity.
You have to give it the 20 games or so, but it's certainly trending towards a situation where at least they know it isn't worth throwing more bad money at it. Let it play out, don't sign any contracts or try to make any roster improvements, and make an honest assessment in December.
And then do what needs to be done.

If you look at the upcoming schedule up to the end of November (23 game mark), it looks pretty dire as there are no freebies in that time frame.
Stars(x3)
Kraken(x2)
Predators(x2)
Golden Knights
Avalanche
Leafs
Senators
Canadiens
Oilers
Canucks
Islanders
Tough to see this team being at .500 or over during that stretch, let alone getting back to .500 overall for the season.

Oh there are def freebies in that time. They're the ones with the flaming C on their chest.

I have a hard time calling it only 8 games even though it rightfully is. This is the same group, full of veteran players, that know how to prepare, play systems and compete.
This team has basically been together for 90 games in its current form and really shouldn't be going through anything close to what it is even if a coach had come in and completely re-written the script.
For me, Conroy should be holding tight for maybe another 4-5 games and if things are not taking a considerable turn, looking to make a big shake up trade. Maybe he is already, but leaving this in its current form is not fair to fans, coaches or some of the younger talent on the roster that look like they are at least trying.

I would rather they leave it as is for a few more months than try to make another move to "save this season".

"Save this season" for what purpose? So we can continue the middle of the pack syndrome for another 25 years and be a boring team to watch on top of it all!
