Nah, because of the universal postal union it's often cheaper to ship stuff to Canada from other countries than it is to ship within Canada.

I used to have a mail order business, and it was economic to have someone drive my parcels to Montana and ship them from there. The ones going to the US were WAY cheaper, but the ones going back to Canada were still cheaper than sending domestically. It's common enough that there are service providers set up with this business model.

Oh Dick Post is the best business ever!! It cost me $22 to send a DVD to Ottawa with CP. It cost me $9.50 to send a 6lb hardcover book to North Carolina with USPS.

I assume you mean DYK Post, cause sending DVDs with CP will probably get you put on some kind of registry.

Alberta on the hook for tens of millions for children’s medication that may never arrive

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/cana...dication-that/

Quote:
Alberta is unlikely to receive the vast majority of children’s pain-relief medication that Premier Danielle Smith spent nearly $75-million procuring from Turkey, because Health Canada says it won’t approve further shipments at this time after resolving the unprecedented drug shortage.

....

But only 30 per cent of the 5 million units of medication paid for by the province was ever shipped to Alberta and even less has actually been used.
Quote:
Part of the deal made by Alberta was that the province had a minimum purchase order set by the supplier, which greatly exceeded population need. Alberta was banking on reselling the imported medication to other provinces to help offset the cost but has since backed away from that plan “at this time,” according to Ms. Taillon.

The federal government has an established approval process for foreign medications to ensure compliance with Canada’s safety, quality and efficacy requirements. Part of the delay in getting the medication on store shelves was ensuring that childproof caps and labelling conformed to Health Canada standards.

When the medications finally did arrive, additional concerns emerged.

Alberta Blue Cross, in a bulletin posted in March, alerted pharmacists that the Turkish product had a lower dosage concentration and must be kept behind the counter so that parents or guardians are educated on how to use it safely.

The bulletin also said the suggested retail price for the product was $11.99. Alberta paid $14 per bottle.
Just supreme incompetence. It's sadly like clockwork now with this clown party.

Maybe we should boot (or reboot) her. She’s a disaster.

A CP flat rate box starts at $16.99 and can weigh up to 5kg, that's USD$12.29 for 11 pounds, and includes the shipping box.

We use these all the time to send stuff to our kid attending Uni in Vancouver.

It's not that type of union. The Universal Postal Union is part of the UN. It runs the agreements postal systems have to deliver mail to other countries.

See: https://www.upu.int/en/Universal-Pos...s/Remuneration

The way the system works the country that the mail originates from keeps most of the money.

I don’t mind this one. In a crisis throwing money and multiple avenues to solve a problem is the correct strategy. Canada bought way too much Covid vaccine, as a result we were 3/4th in the world at getting people vaccinated. I throw this under a similar issue. Same with people angry at giving Quebec our PPE and having poor PPE for our doctors. It was the correct decisions given the crisis.

Yes but they didn't have them 3 years ago. I sell on Amazon and it's over kill with the flat rate if you are sending one book or dvd. I mostly sell on .com now and not .ca as USPS is 1/3 of the price of Canada post even with the flat rate box.

No, the timeline for this outsourced meds was too long, had too many barriers to get into the country to do any good. They knew, or should have known that.
Hmm i wonder what actually solved the crisis...

I agree with Max. It was a stunt then, and it's really unraveling now.

Her supporters will hear that and just blame Health Canada though. They already don't trust them.
