Not to take anything away from Toffoli but he's playing alongside the guy who would be given the Hart if the season ended right now and that certainly helps. Hughes has 17 pts in 6 games (on pace for 232 pts).

Suniev is playing with Canes prospect Scott Morrow.
Morrow is one guy I wouldn't mind seeing if we made a deal with the canes.

Is it confirmed he wanted a six year deal? I doubt he’s getting that anywhere.
Toffoli is a good player but we’ll survive him leaving. It is weird that the trade market for Toffoli was bad, but the market for Sharangovich was good.

It was being speculated he wanted a 4-6 year deal from the Flames and a raise and when they didn't prioritize him he asked for a trade.
Francis and others have mentioned it. Bottom line he wanted term...Tofolli seems to be like a guy that will be good until he isn't
I highly doubt the harshest Flames critics were suggesting giving him a longish term contact.
Sharangovich and a 3rd is better than letting him walk or signing a long deal.
Even with a good season I doubt he gets much term next season...maybe 3 years max

He needs to keep it up...McDrai not winning the scoring title would be great
heck Tofolli, Tkachuk, Phillips, whoever can win it and it would be better than those clowns again

For those complaining about the trade would you honestly not be complaining if the Flames had entered this season without dealing any of their pending UFAs?

No doubt he wanted to capitalize on having a career year and leading the team in scoring. He likely didn't want to risk having lower production the next season and having to negotiate off of that. He probably figured if a deal certainly wasn't coming from the Flames, a trade to another team might give him a better chance of negotiating something. It might not happen with New Jersey, but it was probably worth the risk of trying.

I don't blame him or the Flames
I also don't see many other teams handing out those contracts...just Brad apparently and the Leafs can afford him. I suppose they might lose Nylander
Flames needed to make a stand, I think they did with Backlund too giving him less term then he probably wanted. They aren't just caving to Lindholms demands either. If it means making a so so trade then so be it. Like I said, still better than nothing.
I mean by not signing these guys the Flames could be one of the only teams in the league with cap space next season...could be interesting.

I think the TDL becomes arms race especially with salary retention. Can you imagine the haul we could have got for jonny, hubby, weegs, had tree done things properly this franchise would be in great spot. Nope we got so screwed it's like we are cursed

Unfortunately what you're describing is exactly what the Flames need. A trigger-man/sniper.
We've got too many guys who want to make cute passes that go nowhere.

Wow. McDavid is actually going to be unseated for the Art Ross this year.

It's more likely Jack Hughes steals the Art Ross.

Personally I feel Toffoli, Tanev, and Zadorov are the three pending UFA's that the team should have kept until the deadline as they are the exact type of pure rental players you want to add at the trade deadline as the remainder of the contracts will be easy to absorb and there's not a lot of pressure for the acquiring team to extend them. I do believe it was a miscalculation to trade him in the summer especially given the return which is quite frankly poor. Honestly I'm not exactly sure what Conroy was thinking here unless Flames pro scouts (not an organizational strong point) were much higher on Sharangovich than the rest of the hockey world.

I’m just gonna wait and see how Suniev pans out before calling this trade bad. But honestly, I’d rather get a lackluster return than have another 5+ year 30+ year old contract on the team

I don't believe re-signing Toffoli was ever in the Flames plans.

Definitely missing a sniper like Cammy. FWIW I think Sharangovich can become a middle 6 mainstay if given the opportunity to do so. He's worked hard on the 4th line and deserves more minutes. If anything it should be Dube getting the 4th line minutes so he can get back on track.

Or signed him to a 5-6 year contract to add to the aging players?
