The Breakdown
What does a former Prime Minister, a right wing activist group, from the early 2000's, a UCP Leadership race campaign manager, Rob Anderson's old boss & an overpriced marketing campaign to rip Alberta out of the CPP have in common?
Strap in for a WILD ride!

I doubt Smith has any illusions that an APP would pass a referendum. She’s a demagogue throwing red meat to the sovereigntist wing of the UCP.

You may be right on her expectation. If so, is she doing this solely for political gain, and is there some way she can push through an APP despite a plebiscite loss (which I think is inevitable)?
I can’t imagine the answer to the first question being yes, given the unpopularity of the APP. On the second question, I have no idea.

She’s doing it to the keep the populist wing of the UCP from spinning off into their own party yet again. The political calculation is that as long as the right can stay united, they have a good chance to form the government in Alberta.
I doubt she can push an APP through without a referendum. If this dog-and-pony show gets to the point where the APP is a real possibility, Alberta’s corporate community (who are big UCP donors) will put their foot down.

That may be part of it but I think a larger part is that she IS a populist that's been pushing for this for years.

Historically, this isn't how right-wing politics has played out in recent years. In the US, the Tea Party came in as a protest to Obama being too black. The mainstream right assured us that if the Tea Baggers went too far that they would rein them in and take control. Instead, the loonies took over and got a President elected. In Canada, we were told that when the Reform Party merged with the PC's that the PC's would tamper down the fringes of the Reformers. Instead, the Reformers set up camp and have now elected 3 of the past 4 Federal leaders of the party. When Wildrose merged with the PC's in Alberta we were told that the Lake-Of-Fire bozos would shrivel away and the grown-ups would be in control. They all had to leave to create the dying-on-the-vine Alberta Party. The point is, that once the right-wing radicals infiltrate they generally take over, and that is not good for anyone.

This is a $$$$ of red meat. She doesn't need to exert that much effort or spend that much money to satisfy them. She really wants this.

Gotta give Smith and the UCP credit for figuring out how to govern in a post truth world.
They can do whatever they want while deflecting and denying any controversies. Just need to throw enough red meat at the fringe elements while keeping moderates in line to keep the party united. Then at election time they will hope voters have a short memory and run a tight election campaign promoting their economic skills while stoking fear in the opposition.

Just a reminder that people voted for the UCP after this debacle, and somehow expect them to be a competent government. And yet posters around here still try to convince me that people aren't fundamentally stupid.
/incoming login hack attempt on my CP account. Pro tip, you aren't going to guess it.

No, I think it's a previous CP user, some giant loser who got banned for being a wiener head, like Macman. Unfortunately they are thick enough to think they can guess a password with over 100 bits of entropy with 5 tries every 15 minutes, and that this would benefit them in some way. I don't think they have done the math on this.
That, or having CP send me these password breach notices is the only way they can reach out for attention. In which case, "it's ok little guy, I know life is tough. We recognize you. Good day, sir, and get bent."

Interesting. Do you see the password they attempted to use? Are they sending messages through their attempts?

No, the forum just sends an email like this:
