Well deserved. Now we can have another person to man the point on the PP.

4 is heavy, but the hit was at the buzzer, and Laine was injured. 2-3 seems right to me.

I am glad they are appealing.

The nhl is embarrassing when it comes to the consistency of its discipline. It should make no difference that it was at the buzzer. For me if anything because he was trying to stop a goal that should have mitigated the suspension as an attempt at a hockey play even though I agree he was late and maybe deserved a game or a penalty.

Laine had his head almost down at belt level trying to ice the game... at what point do players have a responsibility to protect themselves and not dive into dumb #### positions and expect the sea to part for them. I understand why legally they are trying to remove a lot of the violence from the game but in 5 or 10 more years the way it is going a hit like this and people will be calling for someone to be suspended for 20-30.

I completely disagree. The timing of the hit should have no bearing on the punishment. That factor is irrelevant.

That’s fine. But the game no longer being in doubt adds to the consequences. That’s what makes it unnecessary and the type of hit they don’t want in the game anymore. Heat of the moment in a tie or close game and sure. Still a suspend able hit. With clock expiring supplemental discipline will be more. That’s why I believe people are shocked it’s as many games as it is.

So a player has to look at the clock before they decide to make a hit?

No scoring in the last 10 seconds then

You can't change the rules because the game is almost over...also when you are playing you don't have a clock on you HUD

League is gonna have a hard time showing comparables if it goes to a third party....in two weeks

A game or two, but four is crazy for someone who doesn’t have a history

So this hit is comparable to the Scheifele hit? (4 games) Is there a rule where you can't hit near the end of the game? I think the position of how Laine was standing when he shot the puck would have made it hard to NOT hit near the head. Similar to the Scheifele hit, but he didn't travel half the rink of momentum to charge into that hit.

Scheifele hit was worse because it was more like he was making a hit because a sure ENG was being scored, not to prevent one.

I’m guessing there were a lot of participation ribbons in your sporting days…… if there were any.

Seems excessive considering it's a first time offence. Like others have mentioned, time on the clock and score is irrelevant. If that's the case, in games that are decided with less than a minute left, should contact not be allowed at all? However he did get him high, I thought 2 games would be more than enough.

Only can appeal to Bettman as it’s under 5 games.

Very similar to Scheifle's hit on Evans. He got 4 playoff games. Laine at 8.7M is a player that should be protected from attempt to injure hits.

Laine already missing 1 game. Having a suspension of the time missed by the victim plus 1 game would be a significant deterrent.

Having him suspended does not help or compensate Columbus at all.

Sorry I’m confused, why should any player be protected differently than another. Is Evans’ health and safety not as important as Laines’?

In theory yes, but hockey is a business, star players put butts in seats. Like it or not the nhl has to protect the talent.

If it was clean, sure. It wasn't and like it or not the timing of a dirty hit is always taken into account.

Worse than a hit in garbage time? How important is it that the Flames lost 3-1 rather than 4-1?

The last face off was with 41 seconds remaining Flames needing 2 goals.

At the time of the hit everyone in knew the Flames lost the game.

If a Flame had the puck at that time they would have shot it from outside the blue line at the goalie.
