Sometimes in hockey, emotions get the better of players. Ras has never showed any sort of consistent tendency to target players in vulnerable positions or play dirty. Totally disagree with your last sentence.

Normally dumb hockey fans (and especially dumb announcers) who talk about a guy "leaving his feet" when he comes off the ice after contact drive me nuts... but in this case Rasmus was clearly well on his way up when he made contact, it's pretty much textbook launching into a hit. And there's no reason for it, had he just braced himself and planted his feet there'd have been no problem and Laine likely would have been fine.

It looks a lot worse in slo mo or frame by frame. I don't think Rasmus had any intent to hit Laine high. Laine's attempt to duck away at the end turned what would have been a stiff hit that caused a scrum into a head shot that warrants a hearing. I'll be annoyed if it's more than 2 games, I think even 1 is sufficient for a player with Rasmus' history.

Dirty hit with the game essentially over, to a vulnerable player who's now injured. 2 games.

Dumb dumb dumb hit. Doesn't matter if it's a Flames' player throwing it or anyone else, no place in hockey for goofy stuff like that. I like how Andersson plays with an edge, so he's going to cross it sometimes. There will be consequences for it.

Setting the tone with no time left? Game was over.

It was a bad play that's fully deserving of two games. I like Andersson but this was an unwarranted dirty play.

I predict the wheel will land on 4 games, just because Flames. NHL justice doesn't seem to go well for this franchise when it gets to the point of a disciplinary hearing.

The game isn't soft because people don't want to see dirty hits.

This has nothing to do with setting a tone and everything to do with a player pissy that he had a bad game in a loss and taking a cheap shot. That wasn't admirable 50, 20, 10 years ago.

I agree that the time of the game shouldn't matter. If the game is on, you are fair game to get hit (legally).
The issue here is he hits Laine's head. You could argue Laine was down in a low position, but the league is generally trying to set the standard you can't follow through with a head shot even in that situation. I think he gets 1 game.

Rasmus was trying to get the hit in at the same time Laine was trying to get an extra empty netter before the horn; I think the urgency made Rasmus leave his feet and given Laine’s vulnerable low position it’s a predatory malicious hit. I voted 3+ games because the league are going to make an example of him to set a bar for the season that will get watered down as the season progresses.

Well, McDavid did get suspended 2 games for this hit.

I feel like Andersson's hit was delivered with more force, and with seconds remaining in the game that may have an impact on how the hit is punished.

NHL seems to want to make examples on headshots in the regular season. I wouldn't be surprised at 3+ games of suspension.
