Columbus hosts Calgary in a non-conference matchup

BOTTOM LINE: The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Calgary Flames will play in an out-of-conference matchup.

Columbus went 25-48-9 overall and 16-23-2 in home games a season ago. The Blue Jackets committed 285 total penalties last season, averaging 3.5 per game and serving eight penalty minutes per game.

Slow start plaguing Jackets ahead of meeting with Flames

"We didn't like our compete level, which sucks to be talking about because that should be expected — but we've got to get better at that," Columbus forward Sean Kuraly said. "Puck management is a big thing for us. And we've been talking about it from Day 1 — and that's the same on every team. I think that's where the frustration comes in with us: our puck management. We're going to have to get better at that."

After an off day Tuesday, the coaching staff put the Blue Jackets through a grueling hour-long practice Wednesday that ended with a gauntlet of drills designed to improve the team’s battle level. For the final 15 minutes, three groups of CBJ players rotated through a drill in which players battled for the puck for around 15 seconds, then skated laps at the whistle.

Hoping for some redemption. I still remember the brutal 3-1 loss in Columbus to a struggling Jackets team last December. That game was when I got the feeling the playoffs may not be in the mix for the Flames as it was such a brutal effort against a very beatable team.

Yes and yet again the Jackets are giving up goals and you could hardly pick a better team to have a back to back against. I'm with you would like to see them win against teams they should beat.
