It was painful watching that late powerplay for the Oilers when the TOI came up on the screen. You could see the Oilers slowing down as they went over 4 minutes on the ice, and of course they started cheating instead of making good plays, leading to the McDavid penalty. I wonder how the rest of the bench feels watching that happen. They're all elite players, they know that the PP2 unit should be getting on the ice way sooner. Just complete nonsense that hasn't worked out in previous years but they keep doing it anyway.

Meanwhile the Flames are out from under Lucic's cap hit, which the Oilers kindly helped them pay off, while paying off Neal's buyout.

It'll be interesting to see if they play him 10 games and lose another $3.25m off the cap next year

Brown would file a grievance if they didn't play him and he was healthy. Unless he suffers a major injury, he's getting the money.

They have to play him 82 games. They don't have anyone else.

That was exactly what I was thinking while watching that unfold as well.
I already mentioned it earlier, but McDavid was so tired on one of the rushes that, when the defenseman passed him the puck a the blueline, he just shoveled it to the winger and coasted into the zone. He had been on the ice for more than 3 minutes (and there was another 3 minute shift a bit earlier, from the 2-man adv), and was completely gassed.
If I am on the bench watching that, I am so disengaged from the team.

Draisaitl is the best centre who doesn't actually play centre in the league.

And (essentially) flipped Lucic for a younger, faster, and (now) better Greer, at a cap hit under the league minimum. If the Oilers had that $1.9M available, they could add a couple Greers, and ice a full lineup (not that they would actually play them, but they'd be on the bench)

I love it. Watching McDumbass play 6 out of 10 minutes in a single frame? Oh its fantastic...in fact...I think its 'Good for the Game.'
They should do it more often. Get the Superstars out there all the time!

They not bothering showing defense pairs because they don't play where defensemen play anyway?

I suspect Chicago will use Bardard much more sensibly and by the book than Edmonton has in their abuse of McDavid. Probably because as great as having Bedard must surely be, it isn't lost on their staff that this is a team game at the end of the day and we have 4 lines and 2 powerplay units for a reason.

The Hawks also seem to have done a good job bringing in veterans to help teach him how to be a pro. As much as I hate Perry, bringing in him, Foligno, and Hall could be very good for Bedard

Hall is also a cautionary tale of a career nearly derailed by unrealistic expectations.

Seems as if they studied McDavid's development and made sure to learn from their mishandling of an elite talent.
And props to them for not awarding Bedard the C before a single game played.
Not a great message to send as it pertains to things like merit

And not just Hall..
The amount of times hall of famers or HOF projections have been attached to articles about Oilers prospects over the years by the likes of Spector, Matheson and Staples is borderline sacrilegious.
They're incapable of retaining caution in their optimism, and the body of work they base it off is even more laughable.

Nothing will beat Robbie Schremp and the famous "600 goals and 1300 points" projection.
He's currently playing in Latvia BTW.

Does he at least have 600 goals and 700 assists? No one said what league he has to get that in...

This summer Trent Cull mentioned on the FAN960 that it is customary to share lineups in the AHL.
As much as each team wants to win, coaches realize that they also need to develop players. Sharing lineups enables more of a community of practice between coaches so they can have a better idea of how to put players in the development roles that they believe will enable growth.
When he was in the AHL, guess which now NHL coach Trent Cull mentioned that he refused to share lineups prior to the game?
Shocking I know.
