Yeah, except then the Habs turned around and gave him $3M+ and his production fell off the table.

He was a total dick last season. It seems like he didn't like the GM, didn't like the roster, didn't like the media, etc. It's kind of how things were with him at the end of his GM tenure as well.

Right ... but when has he not been a "dick" in the media. LA press conferences were legendary.

That's not really new.

I'm sure he was a complete ass, no debating that.

But the Pelletier thing was a concrete issue that was brought up that shows a complete lack of regard for another human.

His hatred of the media blinded and blurred his reasoning, it pretty much consumed him here and he just started doing the opposite of whatever the media was clamouring for; "oh you don't like Lewis and Looch and Ritchie playing so much? I'll show you". Sutter let the media get to him and that's on him.
From what I heard on the radio (maybe Rhett Warrener or others) it was also directed at staff and even subtly at the GM for bringing up players that he didn't want to play in the games versus the vets. There was definitely a tension between what Brad wanted and what Sutter wanted. Conroy spoke about this recently, like how Burke favored a hands off and let the coach decide approach and Brad was more of wanting to determine who was in the room and who was on the ice. Sutter bristled at that.

Of course he bristled at all of it. Treliving lost him the services of Gaudreau and Tkachuk in his mind and replaced them with inferior players. To be fair, I really don't blame him either. The GM didn't hold up his end of the bargain when he brought Sutter in to compete for championships with 2-3 elite forwards.

Sutter's comments of huberdeau being the best passer the team has ever had were said in jest....he knew full well that the guy was nowhere near as good as his numbers suggested.

Playing Richie in the shootout at the end of the year was also another massive middle finger to the front office. You could feel the whole thing was about this is who you got me to get over the hump? We desperately needed a PP guy and this is who you got - well here he is with the season on the line.

Agree with Sutter or not, that's fine. I don't because you do still need to be a decent human to people when things are going badly. But his emotions clearly got the better of him and a lot of that was likely frustration that he came back to push this group for a few years and only got one real kick at the can with a capable team.

Yeah I get that was just referring to the fact it would be a great gain to get someone to produce that way for what he was offered.

Its also time for some teams to treat it like a business at times and let players walk after they produce on cheap deals like that and you have feeling the wont.

The Leafs moved on from Bunting and Carolina paid him, lets see how that goes.

A bunch of assumptions in there ... but if you're right that doesn't say a lot about the person either does it?

Imagine signing up to coach a Western Canadian hockey team (in literally every players bottom 8 in the league and on most no trade clauses), and essentially quitting on the team for losing an American player that demanded a trade out of the market (Tkachuk).

I think “complete lack of regard for another human” is a stretch. That’s a fairly serious thing. I don’t think he had any regard for how Pelletier would take that comment, but based on what we know about Sutter I don’t think anyone could argue he had a complete disregard for any human. Bad boss, still by all accounts a good, generous, and caring person.

Sutter took the time to chat with my family at the airport. He spoke with my kids about sports, school and travel. He might be hard to work for but he's a good guy.

Embarrassing people publicly and making it a story doesn't make a person a good, generous and caring person.

More like a hypocrite actually.

Tearing apart people in a 1 on 1 meeting is one thing. But doing it Infront or peers and the public is humiliating and unneeded.

I don’t think it was his intent to embarrass him.

He might be a hypocrite, too.

Doesn’t mean he doesn’t care for and make time for people. People aren’t all bad or all good, and we don’t need to write off everything else Sutter has ever done to recognize he was not a good coach at the end and no longer fit for the NHL.

Wasn't talking about the media conference, but the not telling him for days if he was in or not when his first game was looming ... making it impossible for him to get his parents there.

Who knows what he was doing last year it was strange stuff.

I am not going to discredit his entire coaching career off one year, but he has been known to do these things before.

I think Darryl Sutter the man outside of a hockey setting a much different person. Darryl Sutter the hockey coach puts on a wrestling gimmick it seems like. He just went too far last year.

But whats done is done its time to move on.

I am not sure every player needs time in the NHL before people can determine that they are not suited for the league. It happens all the time and most often people don't blink but because he has a vocal following we hear a lot more about him.
A player passing through waivers in the ~week before a season starts is evidence of absolutely nothing. All teams are almost totally healthy and working to cut their own rosters down.

It's gotta be like 1% of players who get claimed...a lot of guys who don't get claimed go on to become fulltime NHLers.

I have not once heard anyone who actually knows him refer to Darryl Sutter (on TV, in print, in person) as anything less than a good person outside of the rink.

The guy is just a hard-assed coach, and the only hard-assedness that is tolerated these days is at the level of forgetting a player likes oat milk in their coffee vs almond.

I hope Greer levels Phillips and he is ineffective the entire game. I don't want him to get injured and if he rips it up against the rest of the league that's fine.

When people claim that it was Sutter and the Flames holding him back but nobody else in the NHL wants him it actually does show that it is not just the team holding him back.

The reason there are so few claims is because the guys being waived aren't good enough not because they are good enough and getting held back.

The Wings have absolutely garbage depth on the wings and Mantha is brutal at this point.

With that said they'll now score ten against a, nine from the wing
