Depends on the player, but the "coast" is a really tough league. Not ideal breeding grounds for a guy you want working on specific skills unless they are able to handle themselves well....and not just with their fists. Now i suspect that Bell wouldnt have an issue but he would be a bit of a mark because of his size.

Going back to Tri Cities will allow him to be a leader as a 20YO, likely get all the minutes he can handle in all situations, as well as get more personalized instruction on whatever it is they want him to work on.

I think if they are ready for the A its a no brainer. The ECHL Im not sure they are getting better development then they would in Juniors.

Do NHL teams generally see the ECHL as a place for players who are too old to play junior and not ready for the AHL? Mainly non-prospects, in other words? I had kind of thought of it as a stepping stone.

Can't the player get the ice time and personal instruction in the ECHL? Do the NHL teams have input on the coaches and system for the ECHL affiliate like they do the AHL affiliate?

It sounds like in this case they told him he could either go to Rapid City or back to Tri City and he chose Tri City ( I wouldnt blame him). ECHL can be a stepping stone for sure but its not the same level of Development as the A.

Im sure he would rather go back to Tri City for the season and give it another go trying to make the Wranglers next season. I dont think theres anything wrong with that.

I don't think so either. Given the choice as a 20-year-old, who has already signed their entry level contract...would you prefer junior hockey or the ECHL?
