Give up 2 goals in under a minute and seemingly, the Flames collapsed.

Thought they played well but they got careless in the 3rd. That is fixable.

Flames beat themselves last night.
Could have easily won that game but started getting really sloppy.
Hoping to see Vladar on Monday and a full 60 minute effort.

Why Vladar? Markstrom wasn’t an issue.

Without the stellar goalkeeping, we would’ve been on the wrong end of two bloodbaths by now.
Edit: only 137 posts (with one poster accounting for big chunk of em), after a loss. That is concerning.

I find myself…indifferent with this group.
Tweener team that doesn’t really know what it is.
Coupled with low expectations, it’s hard to get too worked up with wins or losses.

It will have to be by committee is my main point. Do you think they have a 40 goal score or multiple 30 goal guys? I don’t.
They are lacking an elite goal scorer

Hoping it provides a spark.
Rare to say that in a 5 goal loss that the goaltending wasn't an issue but I will agree with you on Markstrom not being the problem here (especially on goals 2 and 3).

Markstrom is 31st in Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60.
Not exactly elite. And this accounts for the bad defensive breakdowns.
However, it's good to see that he has been stronger in first periods. It gives the team a better chance to win.

The team has no sellable star players, and I think this is going to be a bigger story as the season progresses. The attendance for the home opener was bad.
The team didn’t make any positive on-ice changes for this season, and the team did not win over any fans last year with its boring, skill-less, loss-filled hockey.
Banking on a bunch of unexciting players to bounce back is not how you sell tickets. You’ve also got a significant number of players uncommitted to the team. It all adds up to being a tough sell.

I did think Huberdeau looked better in stretches but I’m not yet seeing massive improvement. But maybe it is coming.
It’s a long season and by stealing the first game, Flames avoided starting with a losing streak. I’m less worried about the scoring than I am the great chances they are giving up. That was happening last year, which maybe isn’t a shock since we’re seeing basically the same team. That’s something the guilty players are going to have to figure out, that’s not on coaching.

Its fixable, but can you see it being fixed with this crowd of players? The one constant with this team is their comfort zone.

No it doesn’t. That stat does not factor in defensive positioning at all

I'm not putting this loss on Markstrom, but Pct .892 SV% and 3.57GAA to start the season is... not great.
I give Markstrom five games, if it's more >3 GAA and <.900 SV% I try Vladar for five games and if things don't improve I call the Wolf. Can only wonder what Huska is thinking.
The team wasn't great in front of him, either. But this group needs strong goaltending to have any hope of competing.

How many of those goals did we expect him to save?
Poor play by Mangiapane.
Backlund blowing the zone and Hanifin trying to pass through a player from his own zone him.
Dumb mistakes

Markstrom had 2 save of the year candidates in one powerplay. He looked great for the first two periods, and I'd say the goals against were ones that would have required more incredible saves from him.
Save % doesn't tell the story so far, the defense needs to get better at limiting cross-ice passes for dangerous shots. Those are killing them imo, and hopefully its something that will get sorted as they learn the new zone defense.

Markstrom has been the best Flame so far. Both games could've been ugly without his performances.
The thing is, even if Markstrom is on this season, which so far he appears to be -- it doesn't fix everything. The jury is still out on the quality of this team overall.

Watching the Flames so far this season, reminds me too much of last season of the boring grinding out hockey. It’s early in the season but I still don’t get How Huby is struggling to be a game breaker forward here.
Yes he’s got 3 points but quietly.

All I can get

Scratch Coronato a game or two and have him watch from the press box.

At least systemically it was a huge step forward. The Pens only had 15 five on five shot attempts through 2 periods ... that's miniscule. In high danger terms 7 against five on 5 vs the 15 against Winnipeg.
I see the concerns about offensive generation and goal scoring for sure, the team lacks drivers and game breakers.
Their best bet is to learn the system and keep other teams and bay, and the first two periods were a solid step in that direction.
