5 Things - Flames @ Penguins

1. Big Old Jet Airliner

After opening the regular season on a winning note at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames will spend most of the next month road-tripping around the NHL beginning tonight in Pittsburgh. A five-game swing starts against the Penguins with Calgary in search of back-to-back wins to begin the campaign for the second straight year.

Starting the season with two (or better yet, four) points is always the goal, but the amount of road games in the near term made Calgary’s ability to capitalize on home ice all the more important. The Flames play 14 of the next 20 games on the road beginning with this five-game Eastern jaunt.

Game Preview: Calgary Flames @ Pittsburgh Penguins 10/14/2023 - Lines, how to watch

Last Year: The Pens first faced the Flames last season in the middle of their early-season seven-game winless skid. Nazem Kadri scored twice, and the Penguins’ only goal was a power-play strike by Evgeni Malkin in a 4-1 loss. Things went better in November, although it wasn’t exactly a dominant victory. The Pens were unable to hold onto an early one-goal lead and the game went to a shootout, where Tristan Jarry stoned Mikael Backlund before Malkin finished things off for a 2-1 win.

Penguins vs. Flames: Staying Hot

2. Ned’s Pens Debut?

Tristan Jarry turned in a decent performance in the season opener, but his performance in the nation’s capital was top notch. He stopped all 19 shots en route to a shutout.
After playing in the team's first two games, look for Jarry to receive an early season breather. Newly signed backup goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic expects to start on the second half of the back-to-back, and make his regular season debut for Pittsburgh.

Flames hoping early season road trip can accelerate team bonding

“It’s nice, we’ve been with our families for five months, a little too long,” Flames defenceman Nikita Zadorov said with a big laugh, clearly joking. “It’s nice to get together, especially at the start of the year. We have a couple new faces, get a couple dinners together and get to know each other. It brings guys together, obviously.”

I would be ok with another ugly fancy stats win to start this road trip.

Go Flames!

Looking forward to watching my first game of the season, missed the home opener. Good opportunity for the team to gel on the road. I predict a 3-2’ Flames win. GFG!!!!

Markstrom’s best game as a Flame in the regular season that I can remember was an early season road game against the Pens. Just dominated all game. Let’s see if he can do it again.

So Sharangovich and Ruzicka swap, Dube and Mangiapane swap and Gilbert comes in for Osterle.

Scoronato with Backlund is smart. New guys playing with him do well and can generate some offense and have Backs have their backs.

Dad joke. Done for the day. I'm off to my kiddos hoops game in San Fran. I just hope he doesn't foul out by the half again.

I hope Ruzicka finds chemistry with Kadri & Dube, that line could be a handful to contain.

Good call on taking out Oesterle he sucks.

I liked what Gilbert brought last year he also roamed around in the offensive zone and created some good screen for goals.

I liked Gilbert a lot last season, nice to see him get a chance here to secure the #6 spot.

I like the looks of the Lindholm and Backlund line.

That Kadri line has the potential to be awful, a lot riding on Dube playing with energy IMO.

By sounds of it they want Ruzicka to play a heavy game by holding pucks and using his body to shield guy off and make plays.

The issue is he won't be touching the puck much because both Kadri and Dube like to carry it in and only dish for one timers and stuff.

Strange combination.

Strange combination.
If they can hold it and dish it to Rosy then go to the net for a return pass they can hopefully create some offense that way.

That Kadri line is asking a lot of Kadri, and he got absolutely pummeled against the Jets.

There is a "Ring of Fire" eclipse happening today. That seems like a good omen.

Kadri to carry it in. Dube to go get it. And Ruzicka to make plays with it, once they have the zone. Might work.
