Not sure that Phillips maybe being slightly better than another guy with no spot in the league is a big defense of him.
I doubt that Colombus fans care because they realize he is a nothing when it comes to the NHL.

Yeah the only point is similar players are available on waivers every season. That's not to say they can't be useful to an NHL team.

Matthew Phillips finished the preseason with 2G, 1A, 3P, -2, in 5GP.
In comparison:
Zary 4GP, 2G, 3P , +4
Ruzicka 6GP, 1G, 4P, +3
Hunt 6GP, 2G, 3P, 0
---
Solovyov 5GP, 1G, 3P, +3
Oesterle 6GP, 1G, 4P, +1
Based on the hype around Phillips you'd think he's outperforming the guys in our camp by a country mile. I wish him the best, but I'm far from convinced he will be an offensive dynamo for the caps.

Way to go, Matty!
(Even if they don't think he will ever be an impact player in the NHL, how can anyone not root for this kid?)

Can't really be upset about this if Philips goes on to be a solid player.
Our scouts found him.
Our old GM drafted him largely because our new GM pushed for him after scouting him.
Our current GM wanted to retain him and offered him a contract.
The old coach who was old and wouldn't play him much is gone.
Too bad Philips left and hope he does well.
But Philips doing well is a feather in the cap of our scouts and new GM.

Good way of looking at it and well put. It's not like Conroy didn't see value in him, he just wanted to move on.

Hockey doesn’t have a Designated Hitter but curious to see if Philips becomes a bit of a 3-on-3 and shootout specialist?

GOAT!

I'm happy for the guy, but I'm also thinking Mitch Love has a pretty $$$ dinner tab coming up for the coaching staff if this doesn't pan out.
(for the record, I'm hoping it does pan out... as long as he doesn't win a Hart and an Art Ross and score a Game 6 OT goal against us in the Finals)

And power play. It’ll be really interesting, I imagine his point total to 5 on 5 ice time will look very skewed.

I think it’d be awesome if the fans gave Phillips a standing o when he plays here. Local kid, worked hard to make the show against the odds. Let him know we’re happy for him.
This is why I love sports.

I think some fans would boo their grandma if she played for another team.
I just love that the kid made it.

11:21 ice time in his debut, similar to Darryl Sutter deployment.

According to Dailyfaceoff, Phillips was on the 3rd line with former Flame PTO Milano and Dylan Strome. They also have Mantha on the 4th line - yeesh what happened to Mantha?
